Formula 1: Who can win and how?

As the F1 world prepares for the final weekend of the season at the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi, the drivers' championship is still wide open.

It can all get a bit confusing as to who will walk away with the drivers title on Sunday evening with so many permatations available among the remaining  four contenders; Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.

Available points from the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix:

1st - 25pts

2nd - 18pts

3rd - 15pts

4th - 12pts

5th - 10pts

6th - 8pts

7th - 6pts

8th -  4pts

9th-  2pts

10th -  1pt

(If drivers are tied on points, positions are decided on results countback, first comparing wins and then - if wins are equal - second places and so on)

In simple terms;

Lewis Hamilton: cannot win championship if finishing P2 or lower.

Sebastian Vettel: cannot win championship if finishing P3 or lower.

Mark Webber: cannot win the championship if finishing P6 or lower.

Fernando Alonso v Mark Webber

If: Fernando Alonso finishes P1 or P2: Alonso takes the title on points

Alonso P3, P4 or P5: Webber needs to win

Alonso P6, Webber needs P2

Alonso P7 or P8: Webber needs P3

Alonso P9: Webber P4

Alonso P10 or no points: Webber P5

Fernando Alonso v Sebastian Vettel

If: Fernando Alonso P1, P2, P3 or P4, beats Vettel on points

Alonso P5, P6, P7, P8 : Vettel needs to win

Alonso P9, P10: Vettel needs P2

Mark Webber v Sebastian Vettel

If: Mark Vettel P1: Webber cannot win

Vettel P2: Webber P4 or better

Lewis Hamilton

Must win, Fernando Alonso P11 or worse, Webber P6 or worse, and Vettel P3 or worse.

So, now you know who needs to finish where, the only remaining thing to do is get involved in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix by placing your bets on one of our many markets!
