Clegg future in doubt if election goes wrong?
With Nick Clegg facing embarrassing questions should the Lib Dem vote collapse in Oldham, William Hill quote him at 7/4 to cease to be Lib Dem leader before the next General Election takes place and 2/5 to survive in office - Hills also make him a 16/1 chance to join the Conservative Party before the next General Election.
'Nick Clegg's glory days immediately after the first televised Leader debate seem a long while ago and a poor showing in Oldham East might hasten his demise as Leader' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. The Lib Dems are 5/6 with Hills to poll under 25% of votes cast, 5/6 25% or more.
William Hill say punters believe Labour are past the post in Thursday's Oldham East and Saddleworth By Election and now make then 1/25 favourites to win, with the Lib Dems now out to 9/1, the Conservatives 50/1 and both UKIP and the BNP 250/1.
'After a brief flurry of support for the Lib Dems when the by-election date was first revealed, we have only seen serious money for Labour whose odds have collapsed from 1/3 to the current virtually unbackable odds' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
**A William Hill client has staked £7000 on the Lib Dems beating the Conservatives in Oldham East and Saddleworth, at odds of 1/9, and stands to make a profit of £777.
**Hills now offer 1/12 that the Lib Dems will finish with more votes than the Tories, (6/1 not to) while they offer 5/6 that there will be a voting turnout of 50% or more, 5/6 under 50%.
**It is 4/6 that Labour poll 40% or more of the votes cast, 11/10 that they receive under 40%.
When will next General Election take place? 4/1 2011.....6/1 2012......6/1 2013......3/1 2014......6/4 2015 or later.
Next election result: 13/8 Hung Parliament; 7/4 Conservative Majority; 15/8 Labour Majority; 100/1 Lib Dem Majority.
