Two thirds of punters anti-AV
The vote on changing from first-past-the-post to the alternative vote (AV) is set to take place on 5th May 2011, the day of local elections.
Many people called for reform during the general election, but the odds suggest that AV will be voted out, with bookmakers William Hill having to shorten their odds for AV to be rejected from 5/6 to 8/11 - and offering Even money that the new system will be voted in.
'Early indications suggest that the pro-AV campaign has plenty of work to do to convince people of the need for a change in the first past the post system - and as far as our political punters are concerned the rejection of AV is already past the post- two third of both the bets and the stakes we have taken have been for a No vote' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
Punters are voting with their wallets and we are confident that they will also dictate with their ballots on the upcoming vote.
WILLIAM HILL..... WILL THE NEW AV SYSTEM WIN THE REFERENDUM....8/11 NO...EVENS YES.
