Champions League Opta Facts MD4 – November 4-5th

 

Juventus v Olympiakos

  • Juventus lost 0-1 at Olympiakos on the last Champions League matchday, thanks to a goal from Pajtim Kasami.
  • Juve have never lost both home and away against the same opponent in the opening group stage of the Champions League.
  • The Bianconeri have lost three of their last four Champions League matches (W1 L3).
  • Olympiakos have lost three successive Champions League games away from home, netting just one goal in games.
  • Míchel' side are unbeaten in their last four Champions League games against Italian opposition (W2 D2).
  • The Greek side won their last Champions League away trip to Italy; 2-1 at Lazio in November 2007.
  • Juventus have kept a clean sheet in 12 of their last 20 Champions League group stage games at home. They have also scored in all but one of these matches.
  • Kostas Mitroglou has had a hand in 11 goals in his last 15 Champions League appearances (nine goals, two assists).
  • Seven of Carlos Tévez's eight Champions League goals have come at home.

 


Malmo FF v Atletico Madrid


  • Malmo suffered a 0-5 defeat to Atletico Madrid on MD3 of the Champions League; the joint-heaviest margin of defeat by a Swedish side in CL history.
  • Koke assisted three goals in this game for Atletico - the first player to have a hat-trick of assists in a CL match since Phillip Lahm for Bayern Munich in November 2012.
  • Koke has four assists in the Champions League this season; twice as many as any other player.
  • This will be the sixth occasion that a Spanish side have faced a Swedish side in the Champions League. The only Swedish victory in these games came when IFK Goteborg defeated Barcelona 2-1 in September 1994 (L3 D1 of the other four).

  • Basel have lost three of their last four Champions League games (W1 L3).

  • Liverpool won their only previous away game against Real Madrid - 1-0 in February 2009, thanks to a goal from Yossi Benayoun.
  • Real Madrid have won nine successive Champions League home games; their longest run since December 1998.
  • The last time that Madrid went on a longer winning run at home in the Champions League/European Cup was between Sept 1978 and March 1988 (17 wins in a row).
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (70) needs one more goal to equal Raul's all-time goalscoring record in the Champions League (71 goals).
  • Ronaldo has scored 55 goals in 54 Champions League appearances for Real Madrid.
  • Karim Benzema has scored in three successive CL appearances (four goals) - he hasn't scored in four successive CL apps since March 2011.
  • Liverpool have failed to score in their last two Champions League games, despite attempting 27 shots (inc. blocked).
    The Reds have not failed to score in three successive CL games since September 2006 (five games).

 


Zenit St. Petersburg v Bayer Leverkusen


  • Zenit have not won any of their last six Champions League home games (D5 L1).
  • Bayer Leverkusen have won four of their last five European games (incl. qualifying), scoring 12 goals and conceding just four.
  • Zenit have failed to score and have attempted just four shots on target in their last two Champions League matches.
  • In their last game away against Bayer Leverkusen, they attempted just two shots (excl. blocked) - their worst tally in a CL game since December 2011 (one shot v Porto).
  • Leverkusen have only allowed their opponents three shots on target in their three Champions League games so far this season; no side have conceded fewer.
  • Zenit's heaviest home defeat in the Champions League came in their only previous CL home match against a German side; 2-4 v Dortmund in February 2014.

  • In fact, just one goal has been scored in Monaco's three Champions League games so far in 2014-15.
  • The French side have failed to score in four of their last five CL away games, but they scored five goals in the other match during this run (5-0 v Deportivo La Coruña in Dec 2004).
  • Benfica lost their opening home game of the 2014-15 Champions League season against Zenit St. Petersburg (0-2) - they have never lost two home games in the group stages of a single CL campaign.

Arsenal v Anderlecht


  • After failing to score with their 11 shots in the opening 88 minutes of their last game against Anderlecht, the Gunners scored with their final two shots to win the game.
  • This was the first time since November 2003 (v Inter Milan away) that Arsenal have scored two goals in the final five minutes of the same Champions League game.
  • Only one of the previous 13 Champions League meetings between teams from Belgium and England have been won by the Belgian team (11 English wins, one draw).
  • No English side has failed to score in a Champions League game against a Belgian opponent before (13 games).
  • Anderlecht suffered their worst defeat in Europe against an English side: 0-10 against Manchester United in the European Cup preliminary round in 1956/57.
  • The Gunners' joint-biggest win in Europe came against a Belgian team, beating Standard Liège 7-0 in the Cup Winners Cup in 1993/94.
  • Lukas Podolski has scored in six of his nine Champions League appearances for Arsenal, including in four of his last five apps in the competition.

  • With their 4-0 win over Galatasaray on MD3, Dortmund extended their winning run to four games in the Champions League. This is their best run of wins in the CL since October 1997 (eight wins).
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has had a hand in four goals in his three Champions League appearances for Dortmund so far this season (three goals, one assist).
  • Galatasaray have conceded a goal in every one of their previous seven Champions League games against German opposition.
  • The Turkish side have scored only five goals in their last eight games in the Champions League.
  • Galatasaray have not won any of their last five Champions League matches (L3 D2).
  • Dortmund are one of only two sides yet to concede a goal in the 2014-15 Champions League (alongside Monaco).
  • Dortmund have fired the most shots (excl. blocked) this season in the Champions League (52).

Bayern Munich v Roma


  • Bayern Munich enjoyed a 7-1 win at Roma on MD3 of the 2014-15 Champions League; the third time that they have scored seven goals in a Champions League game.
  • This 1-7 reverse was Roma's joint-heaviest Champions League defeat; alongside their 1-7 loss to Man Utd in April 2007.
  • Roma have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 15 Champions League away games.
  • Bayern have enjoyed four successive CL wins against Italian opponents; netting 14 goals and conceding just three.
  • Thomas Müller has been involved in 19 goals in his last 26 Champions League appearances (15 goals, four assists).
  • Müller now has 23 Champions League goals; the only German to have scored more in the competition is Mario Gomez (26).

  • Barcelona have only failed to score in one of their last 29 Champions League group stage games.

Paris Saint Germain v APOEL Nicosia


  • APOEL Nicosia have enjoyed just one win in their last nine Champions League matches (W1 D2 L6).
  • The Cypriot side have managed less possession than their opponents in 12 successive Champions League games.
  • Paris SG have scored in 20 of their last 21 Champions League matches.
  • PSG have won four successive CL home games; their best run in the competition at Parc de Princes since October 2000 (six wins).

  • Chelsea's 6-0 win over NK Maribor on MD3 was their record victory in the Champions League.
  • Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in nine of their last 14 Champions League games.
  • Following his goal in the last game against Maribor, Didier Drogba has scored in his 12th consecutive Champions League season. Only Raul (14) has managed a longer such run.
  • Eden Hazard scored as many goals in Chelsea's 6-0 win over Maribor on the last matchday (2) as he had in his previous 23 CL appearances.
  • NK Maribor have scored only four goals in their nine Champions League games.
  • Since winning their first ever Champions League game versus Dinamo Kiev in September 1999, Maribor have lost five and drawn three of their eight CL matches.
  • No goalkeeper have made more saves (17) in the 2014-15 Champions League than Maribor's Jasmin Handanovic.
  • Maribor have not kept a clean sheet in any of their previous four Champions League games in Slovenia.

  • Sporting Lisbon have lost four and drawn one of their last five Champions League games.
  • There have been 31 goals scored in the last seven CL games involving Sporting (4.4 per game); including seven in the last meeting between these sides on MD3 (Schalke 4-3 Sporting).
  • There were seven goals scored from just 10 shots on target in the last meeting between these two sides on October 21st.
  • Nani has scored more goals (2) in his three CL appearances for Sporting Lisbon than he had in his final 21 CL apps for Man Utd (1).

  • Jackson Martínez has scored four goals in his last five Champions League appearances for Porto.

Shakthar Donetsk v BATE Borisov


  • Shakthar beat BATE Borisov 7-0 on the last matchday; the joint-second biggest margin of victory in CL history.
  • This 7-0 win was the biggest away victory in the history of the Champions League.
  • BATE Borisov have conceded 14 goals so far in the Champions League in 2014-15; five more than any other side.
  • In the last meeting between these two sides, Luiz Adriano scored the third quickest hat-trick in Champions League history (12 minutes).
  • In this 7-0 win, Adriano also became the second player to score five goals in a Champions League game, after Lionel Messi.
  • BATE Borisov is the second team after Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League history to concede six or more goals in two games within the same season.
  • The record tally for goals conceded in a Champions League group stage is 22 - set by Dinamo Zagreb in 2011-12 and FC Nordsjaelland in 2012-13.
