Sacre Bleu - Record Fifty Grand World Cup Wager
A William Hill customer walked into one of the company's betting shops in Scotland and staked the biggest ever 'handicap' bet struck in Rugby World Cup history.
The punter has staked £50,000 on massive underdogs France beating the all-conquering All Blacks - with the benefit of a 17 point start.
The bet was struck at Even money which means he will collect £50,000 profit if France finish 16 points or less behind New Zealand in the Final.
'Handicap betting is a way of bringing apparently one-sided contests closer together by awarding the underdogs x amount of points' advantage over the favourites - and this is the biggest bet ever taken on a bet of this kind' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
New Zealand are overwhelming favourites at 1/9 to win the World Cup, with France at 5/1.
Hills make the All Blacks - 1/8 to win in 80minutes' play with France 15/2 and the draw a 40/1 chance.
Handicap betting - France +17 Evens; New Zealand -17 Evens; Tie - 16/1
