The Masters 2009 draw and scores

The Masters kicks off the New Year for snooker with Wembley Arena the venue for the second year.

2008 winner, Mark Selby, is one of four former Masters champions in the betting for this year's event. John Higgins is looking for his third Masters title, world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan his fourth while Stephen Hendry would become a seven-time Masters champion if he wins this year - exactly twenty years since he first claimed the title.

The Masters is an invitation tournament rather than a ranking event. The top 16 players in the world rankings are joined by the winner of a qualifying tournament and a wild card which this year are Judd Trump and Shanghai Masters champion Ricky Walden.

The Benson and Hedges Masters was first won by John Spencer in 1975, beating Ray Reardon. Riley's Snooker Clubs sponsored the tournament for a year after tobacco companies were banned. For the last three years it was officially known as the SAGA Insurance Masters, despite the efforts of Jimmy White to have the tournament named in memory of Paul Hunter who won the Wembley event three times in four years. Hunter died of cancer in 2006 at the age of just 27.
