williamhill.com UK Championship update
Another firm favourite for the 2011 Williamhill.com UK Championship has fallen by the wayside. The firmly fancied Mark Williams (2/5 before the off) was well backed to win both the match and the tournament but was defeated 6-3 by qualifier, Ricky Walden.
"With Ronnie and Higgins going out on Tuesday, punters were extremely keen to get on board with Williams but he didn't quite get the rub of the green and Ricky Walden has given us cause for much celebration," said Hill's spokesman Joe Crilly.
A topsy turvey game between Martin Gould and Shaun Murphy saw Gould go out to 20/1 when 5-0 down but gave gutsy punters a run for their money clawing the game back to 5-4, before the former World Champion saw out the match 6-4. Murphy is 7/1 to win the tournament, having halved in price since the weekend.
Ricky Walden now faces Shaun Murphy in the quarter final and Hills make Murphy the favourite at 4/7 to win the contest (Walden is 11/8).
"Ricky Walden has surprised a few here at the Barbican over the past few days and he could well do us a favour once again when he comes up against Shaun Murphy," said Hill's spokesman Joe Crilly.
