Federer's form fuels favouritism
William Hill make Roger Federer 4/6 favourite to beat 6/5 Rafa Nadal in the Australian Open Final – despite Federer having lost on each of the four occasions the pair met in 2008.
With the great rivals facing each other for the first time since their epic Wimbledon final, Hills offer 9/4 that it takes a fifth set to separate them once again, and 12/1 for the match to last longer than the marathon 4 hours 48 minutes they spent on court back in July.
Nadal may be world number 1 and on paper probably should be favourite, but the betting reflects the huge public support for Federer. Since the defeat of Murray, all the serious money has been for just one man.
Federer has shown himself to be in outstanding form, whilst Nadal was pushed to the limit in the semi-final. There was a huge public gamble on Federer before the Wimbledon final and we’re bracing ourselves for another. It seems that punters want their revenge just as much as Roger himself.
