Federer’s wonderful win makes punters (and Oxfam!) smile

The Federer victory over Andy Murray was great news for the majority of William Hill customers after they came piling in for Roger throughout Sunday. "The expected patriotic punt on Murray never materialised, in fact quite the reverse. Perhaps they were ensuring that even if Andy lost they would at least be financially happy," said Hill's spokesman Rupert Adams

A Side effect of Roger Federer's seventh Wimbledon title is a six figure windfall for the charity Oxfam from bookmakers William Hill.

A William Hill customer, Nick Newlife, staked a £1520 bet in 2003 at odds of 66/1 that before the year 2020 Federer would win Wimbledon on seven occasions.

Mr Newlife, who lived in Oxford, died in 2009 at the age of 59, bequeathing his entire estate, including the Federer bet to Oxfam.

'Nick Newlife was a keen gambler on sports, and in particular a great tennis fan, whose two favourite players were Roger Federer and Andy Roddick - he staked bets on each of them to become multiple Wimbledon winners, but sadly did not live to see Roger land perhaps the most spectacular bet we have ever taken on tennis.' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.

The bet returns £101,840 - to add to the £37,000 he also won from bets on the Swiss winning 5 Wimbledons, 12 and 14 Grand Slams

Andy Murray is 4/1 to win the gold medal at London 2012 and 5/1 to win the final Slam of 2012 in the USA. The wait for a British winner at Wimbledon goes on and Hills offer 5/1 that Andy Murray goes one better in 2013 but he is 8/13 to not have lifted the famous trophy by the end of 2017.
