Gentlemen's Wimbledon quarter finals preview

After a fantastic day of Ladies tennis on Monday when all 4 favourites obliged in their quarter finals it's time for the men to take centre stage on Wednesday.

Opening match on centre court sees Andy Murray (1/25) take on Vasek Pospisil (10/1) in what looks on paper a fairly easy match up for the British player. After coming through the test against big serving Ivo Karlovic in the last round Murray will be facing a different style of player here, a player who plays a much more similar game to himself. The H2H favours Murray 3-0, with 2 of those victories coming in 2015 both in straight sets albeit on hard courts, indeed all 3 of their match-ups have finished in straight sets victories to Murray. Pospisil played a fantastic match in his last round coming from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2  against Victor Troicki on Monday, and followed up later in the day losing another epic 5 set match with his doubles partner whilst trying to retain their Wimbledon doubles title. It's a massive ask to come back from playing 10 sets of ultra competitive tennis just 2 days ago and his only hope I feel is that Murray has an off day. Weighing up the options it's Murray in straight sets here for me which is quoted at 2/5.

Following this we have world number 1 Novak Djokovic (1/12) who plays the current US Open champion in Marin Cilic (13/2). Djokovic unlike the other players in the quarter finals had to play Tuesday, concluding the final set of his match against Kevin Anderson eventually coming through 7-5 for a 5 set victory. Whilst this won't affect his fitness levels come match time he had a tougher match than what i believe he would have expected and I still have the nagging doubt that there is some mental baggage being carried over from his defeat in the French open final. A 12-0 H2H in favour off the Serbian says that it's going to be a very tough ask for Cilic, but he should take something at least from his tight 5 set defeat here only last year. Hand on heart I can't see Cilic winning this but he can at least take a set of Djokovic which is priced at 6/5.

Out on court 1 we open with the 7 times champion Roger Federer (1/8) who takes on first time Grand Slam quarter finalist Gilles Simon (5/1). Both players have come to this stage with relative ease with Federer dropping only single set whilst Simon has dropped 3. H2H records give Federer the nod 5-2 (although he has won their last 5 meetings), but there have been some tight matches mixed amongst them including both of their meetings in Grand Slams which have both gone to the full 5 sets. The odds again tell us all we need to know about the likely winner but of the real outsiders amongst the quarter final matches Simon has to be respected to most, and surely the stats say that he must take at least a set off the Swiss legend which is priced at 10/11.

Finally we come to what on paper at least looks the most competitive match of the 4 with French Open champion Stan Wawrinka (4/9) taking on the resurgent Richard Gasquet (7/4). For the purists this should be a battle of what are arguably the best 2 single handed backhands in the game at the moment and I'm expecting some excellent tennis action. They have spilt their only 2 meeting on the tour 1-1, and both have been in excellent form here this fortnight, with only Gasquet managing to lose a single set so far. Their only meeting in a Grand Slam tournament also went the full 5 sets  so I fully expect both players to win at least a set which is priced at 8/15, and I also expect Wawrinka to come out on top eventually  with a 3-1 victory currently priced at 14/5.

Much as I love to give the outsiders a chance these games look solidly in the hands of the favourites with the 4 fold paying a shade over 4/5 which would complete all 8 favourites winning the respective quarter finals.
