September Preview: NFL, Champions League & The Ryder Cup

September is a sacred month for sports fans, and at the Home of Betting we have a wide range of markets on all the big events.

First off, the blood and thunder of Aviva Premiership rugby returns, as Northampton Saints begin the defence of their title at home to Gloucester on Friday 5th September. The Premiership final has been won by four separate teams over the last four years, but can the Saints become the first side to retain the title since Leicester Tigers in 2010?

Sports fans both sides of the pond are licking their lips ahead of the start of the NFL, as last year's Super Bowl sensations Seattle Seahawks take on the Green Bay Packers on Friday 5th September to kick off the campaign. Who will get off to the best start possible?

The US Open reaches its finale, as the likes of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer battle it out to become the new men's champion, while Serena Williams chases a sixth tournament triumph at Flushing Meadows. Can one of the outsiders spring a surprise?

In cricket, England conclude their dismal ODI series with India aiming to avoid a 4-0 drubbing, before a one-off T20 match takes place at Edgbaston on Sunday 7th September. The games are must-wins for under-siege captain Alastair Cook, who is fighting for his captaincy.

The UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign gets underway, as England look to get off to a winning start against Switzerland. Roy Hodgson's charges should be confident of progress from Group E, which includes minnows San Marino, Lithuania and Estonia, and put a dreadful summer in Brazil behind them.

Staying with football, and the glitzy, glamourous, Manchester United-less UEFA Champions League begins. Liverpool are back in the competition for the first time since 2010, while it is no secret that European glory is top of the agenda at the Etihad Stadium. The Citizens face the toughest opener, taking on Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, while Arsenal must travel to Dortmund.

It is a particularly big month for racing fans, with the St Leger festival at Doncaster. The St Leger Stakes - the oldest Classic race in the world - takes centre stage on Saturday 13th September. Contested over one mile, six furlongs and 132 yards, the fifth and final classic of the season will see the likes of Kingston Hill, Romsdal and Snow Sky go head to head for a record prize fund of £650,000. All races at the meeting will be streamed on our very own William Hill Television - where we also show football, tennis, darts snooker and ice hockey.

The Super League reaches a crescendo with the commencement of the play-offs. Wigan Warriors were last year's Grand Final winners, but St Helens have been in spectacular form this season, and look well set to claim their first triumph since 2006.

Golf fanatics are counting down the days until the 40th Ryder Cup, which takes place on the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland. Europe set out to defend the title they miraculously won at Medinah in 2012 and earn a third straight triumph, while US captain Tom Watson and his team have a big point to prove.

Whatever your sport and however you choose to bet, we at the Home of Betting hope you enjoy this sporty September.
