Becky to give bookies that sinking feeling
Rebecca Adlington to give bookmakers a million pound sinking feeling.
For the first time, over one million pounds will be gambled on the outcome of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, say bookmakers William Hill, who have slashed dual gold medal winning Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington from 9/4 to 5/6 favourite to come out on top.
"For the first time in years there are at least three contenders with very strong claims to win the Award and as a result betting has been fast and furious since the Olympics, and received another boost when Lewis Hamilton won the F1 World Title.
"There will be over a million pounds riding on the outcome for the first time." said William Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe.
"However, Becky's backers have to overcome the recent curse of the favourite, which has seen Lewis Hamilton last year and Darren Clarke in 2006 both beaten when odds-on favourites and the British public has recently taken a great delight in refusing to be told which way to vote in public votes - over John Sergeant in Strictly Come Dancing, for example, and by keeping David Van Day in the jungle in I'm A Celebrity for much longer than the pundits predicted."
