Bradley Leaves Bookies With An Olympic Sized Headache
Long time favourite, Bradley Wiggins scooped the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for 2012 leaving William Hill with a bit of a headache.
"Wiggo was favourite for SPOTY since the day he first pulled on the Yellow Jersey and just like in France, he did not relinquish favouritism until the bitter end, beating off the toughest of competition in what has been the most incredible of sporting years," said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. "Because he was favourite for so long, he obviously attracted the big boys and a couple of £10k bets on Wiggins added to the many thousands of smaller bets means we are looking at quite a loss."
William Hill took £15,000 in the last hour leading up to the start of Sports Personality taking SPOTY 2012 betting figures to over £400,000, dwarfing the previous best, set in 2010 - £165,000.
