Oscar fever sets in as Golden Globe nominations are made

The Social Network, David Fincher's biopic of Mark Zuckerberg, is the 8/15 favourite at William Hill to scoop the Best Picture award at February's Oscar's ceremony, but faces stiff competition from The King's Speech (5/2) and The Fighter (9/1). Fincher himself is 1/3 to win the Academy Award for best director.

Colin Firth's portrayal of King George VI looks set to win him the Oscar and he is offered at 1/3 while his closest rival, Jesse Eisenberg is 5/1 for his role in The Social Network. Christian Bale lost almost two stone to play Mark Wahlberg's trainer/brother in The Fighter, and he is the 4/11 red-hot favourite to win the best supporting actor Oscar. This year's Oscars host, James Franco, is 7/1 to pick up a Best Actor award for his performance in 127 Hours.

"Biographical films have featured heavily in recent years in the nominations, falling short at the final hurdle, however, there is a real chance that The Social Network or The King's Speech could walk away with the big prize this year," said Hills spokesman Joe Crilly.

Britain has a fair chance of picking up an Oscar also. As well as Colin Firth, Lesley Manville (6/1 - Best Actress), Christian Bale (4/11 - Best Supporting Actor), Helena Bonham-Carter (3/1 Best Supporting Actress), Danny Boyle (7/1 - Best Director), Christopher Nolan (6/1 - Best Director) and Tom Hooper (7/1 - Best Director) all in with a shout of picking up an Oscar statuette.
