Over £50,000 Staked On Royal Baby Name In Last 24 Hours

William Hill have now taken over £350,000 worth of bets on the royal baby with £25,000 staked on the day Kate's labour was announced and that figure already smashed by midday on Tuesday with bets pouring in on the name of the baby. The current favourite is George which has been backed in from 9/1 to 2/1 in the space of 24 hours, while James is 4/1 having been as long as 12/1 on Monday.

"The money keeps rolling in for the Royal Baby and at £350,000 we have already far exceeded the amount we were predicting we would take," said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. "We have taken bets from over 100 different countries and should the announcement of a name be delayed until the end of the week the half million mark could easily be breached with William Hill alone. It is easily fathomable to predict the total amount of money staked on the royal baby so far is close to the £2m mark."

The latest addition to the Royal Family already has a friend in William Hill, a girl was the red hot favourite to be the gender of the young baby.

However, in being a boy, he has defied the odds and the wishes of the majority of William Hill punters who were convinced a princess was on the way.

One gutsy punter in Austria even staked £1000 at 11/10 on the arrival of a boy resulting in a return of £2,100.

"Ever since Kate supposedly nearly let slip that she was having a daughter, we have seen one way traffic for the baby to be a girl and this is a massive shock to us and punters alike," said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly.

William Hill's Royal Baby betting bonanza ended up taking nearly a quarter of a million pounds with over £20,000 worth of bets placed on the baby's name in the final day of betting.

"The amount of interest we have seen in the royal baby has been astounding and we have taken over £200,000 worth of bets from over 100 countries," said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly. "For a market of this nature, those figures are beyond anything we could ever have imagined."

William Hill are now looking forward to the next big event in the young Prince's life and are offering Even money that his christening ceremony takes place at Buckingham Palace and 5/1 that it takes place at St George's Chapel. It is inevitable that there will be a number of Godparents and Aunty Pippa and Uncle Harry are both offered at Even money while Dad's best friend Thomas vanStraubenzee is next in the betting at 2/1.
