Klose: the man for the big stage

It's not even 2010 yet but I'm already salivating at the thought of the attacking talent on show in South Africa at next year's World Cup finals.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney, the list goes on and on but, for me, one man stands out in the World Cup top goalscorer betting and that's Germany's Mr Dependable Miroslav Klose.

Forget his club form, which is usually pretty middle of the road, as soon as he pulls on the famous white of Germany he becomes a whole new man, the ultimate international striker.

Five goals in World Cup 2002, five more goals, plus a Golden Boot award, in the 2006 edition and an international record that has him scoring on average one goal every two games.

This doesn't even mention the pesky Germans' ability to give strong accounts of themselves in every tournament under the sun, or the fact his club and country partnership with Lucas Podolski is one of the best honed in International football.

Klose may not provide a full blooded performance all over the pitch but he is one of the few out-and-out strikers in South Africa that has a knack of simply being in the right place at the right time.

The best news is, and I know this doesn't take into account any fitness guarantees, he can be backed at a huge 25/1 - by all accounts the stand out bet amongst all selections.

Obviously nothing is guaranteed when predators like David Villa arrive with the backing of a set of the most gifted players in the world around him, however nobody else has the World Cup experience of Klose.

As for best known chances from Premier League football, past and present, you have to be looking towards Didier Drogba as the most enticing bet, again at 25/1.

Much talk has been made of an African nation having a genuine shot of lifting the most treasured prize in world sport, and it seems the Ivory Coast are the best endowed with a host of top names amongst their ranks.

The Toure brothers, Solomon Kalou, Didier Zokora and Emmanuel Eboue are all household names throughout Europe but it's Drogba who provides the main threat.

Not since George Weah was banging in goals for fun at AC Milan has any African star been quite so lauded as Chelsea's star man and as everyone is seeing this season, Drogba really is shining as one of the best forwards in the World.

His scoring record of 41 goals in 60 appearances is simply phenomenal and the only reason I'm looking at Klose rather than Drogba as the top bet is due to my scepticism about the Ivory Coast's ability to go deep.

If my lack of faith in the African Nations as genuine Cup threats is proved wrong then don't be surprised to see Drogba being the man that has done it.

Please note that our World Cup top goalscorer betting is not the same as the Golden Boot award given out by Fifa. The Golden Boot is awarded to a Fifa selected player if there is a tie for top goalscorer, William Hill's betting is subject to dead heat rules.
