Penalties probable as England face Germany

It's the mouth watering clash England fans both love and loath as once again, we take on the mighty Germans.

Looking through the statistics provided by OPTA, William Hill's price of 9/2 about the England v Germany match going to penalties looks a fantastic bet as all four knockout matches between England and Germany in major international tournaments have ended as 90 minute draws, going on to extra time.

And as neither England or Germany have EVER lost a ‘Round of 16' match at the World Cup finals, the 90 minute draw (2/1) has to be a realistic punt, with Germany 9/5 and Fabio Capello's team 17/10.

This year's England squad have only managed to produce two goals in their first three World Cup Group C matches, drawing 1-1 with the United States and beating Slovenia 1-0.

English fans have been disappointed to say the least and make no mistake, the match against Germany does look an ominous task.

They've netted five in three matches and the Group C winners look a dominant force.

If England are to hold out against Germany, the defence will have their toughest challenge yet as things don't seem to be going our way at the other end of the field, Terry and Cole will have a harder match than that of Rooney up front.

Think low scoring, think extra time, think England to win on penalties.

Need some stats?

Germany have failed to convert just three out of 30 World Cup penalties (incl. shootouts), with Lukas Podolski's miss against Serbia the Germans' first spot-kick failure in 18 attempts.

England, on the other hand have missed three of their last four spot-kicks (all shootout) in the World Cup, whilst since 1966, they have netted 12 out of 19 spot-kicks.

The last two knockout games between these two sides at major tournaments have ended in penalty shootout wins in the semi-final for Germany (1990 World Cup and Euro 1996).
