T20 World Cup Qualification, Format and Point Systems

The twelve teams that reached the Super 12 phase – essentially two groups of six countries – of the 2021 World Cup automatically qualified for the 2022 tournament. Of those countries, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand and South Africa qualified directly for this year’s Super 12 phase based on performances in the 2021 tournament and rankings as of November 2021. Those eight countries were drawn into the following two groups:

Group 1 Group 2
AfghanistanBangladesh
AustraliaPakistan
England India
New ZealandSouth Africa

But before any of those fixtures can commence, as the name ‘Super 12’ suggests, we need four more countries to enter the process. This is what is known as the Group Stage, compromising of eight unqualified nations vying for the final four Super 12 stage places. Those eight nations have been drawn into the following two groups:

Group A Group B
NamibiaIreland
NetherlandsScotland
Sri LankaWest Indies
United Arab EmiratesZimbabwe

Starting from Sunday 16th October, each team will play another group member once in a round-robin format, with the top two countries from each group making their way to the Super 12 phase. This process will last six days, and the Super 12 phase will officially get underway with hosts Australia against New Zealand on Saturday 22nd October.

In similar vein, all six teams from each group in the Super 12 phase will play each other once in another round-robin format across a 15-day period, with two points for a win and zero for a loss (and one for an unlikely tie).

Knockout

The top two teams from the Super 12 phase will subsequently qualify for the semi-finals in a straight knockout format. The winner of Group A will play the runner-up of Group B and vice-versa. The tournament will conclude on 13th November, with the final to be held at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). In total, 45 matches will be played.

Who are the current T20 World Cup champions?

Australia are the current T20 World Cup champions after beating New Zealand in last year’s tournament in the UAE.

What are the odds for the T20 World Cup?

India (12/5) were dealt a blow when star bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out with a lower back stress fracture, but their new-ball attack remains in good hands with the supremely talented Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh. A batting line up of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya is utterly formidable, meaning they should be in the running for a first ICC World Cup title for 11 years.

England (11/4) have likewise had to deal with long-term injures to Jofra Archer and the in-form Jonny Bairstow, whilst usual opener Jason Roy was untimely dropped due to poor form. However, they possess commendable depth in white-ball cricket, exemplified by Yorkshire’s Harry Brook winning player of the series against Pakistan recently. England can bat deep and will always post competitive scores on the board, led by Buttler and the returning Alex Hales at the top, with their odds of 11/4 to win what would be a memorable World Cup in their rivals’ back yard reflecting the quality at their disposal.

Last year’s finalists New Zealand (7/2) have finished runners up in the last two ICC World tournaments and should never be discounted. Despite a batting line up that lacks dynamism compared to some of the other favourites, their seam bowling remains excellent – spearheaded by the veteran Trent Boult.

Australia (8/1) are the current champions and possess quality and experience all throughout their squad. Their seam bowling attack struggled in their recent three-game series in India, not least the usually imperious Pat Cummins, but they will certainly profit from being in familiar home conditions on fast and bouncy pitches.

The significance of Australia playing in their home country cannot be overstated, with home advantage in cricket arguably more substantial than any other global sport. Any team will do well to beat the current world champions in their own back yard as they bid to record a second successive T20 World Cup title – a feat never achieved before.
