Super League Grand Final preview: Saints to slay the Dragons

| BY News Team

Another gruelling season is in the books of the Super League, and just two teams remain. Perennial contenders St Helens are looking for an impressive ‘three-peat’, while Catalans, just four years after flirting with relegation, have had an astonishing season, winning the League Leaders Shield and entering the final with plenty of hope.

We preview the final and the best bets below.

Saints return to the Grand Final

St Helens have been good for the duration of the Super League era it seems, and this year is no different. Already Challenge Cup winners, Kristian Woolf’s side have looked confident throughout the year, comfortably despatching a gutsy Leeds side in the last game.

With a powerful forward unit creating the space for electric outside backs, it’s a difficult juggernaut to stop, being masterfully steered by a spine including the evergreen James Roby, Jonny Lomax and the departing Lachlan Coote.

Saints enter the final as 4/11 favourites, while the handicap sits at eight points. While unlikely to be as dramatic as Jack Welsby’s last gasp score last year, the Merseyside club enter as favourites for a reason, with superstar wingers Regan Grace odds on at 4/5 and Tommy Makinson at evens to score anytime. Grace has been in strong form recently and is enhanced to 4/1 to cross the whitewash twice.

Dragons to set Old Trafford alight

The Catalan Dragons have been exceptional this year, with a combination of extravagant, attacking rugby and defensive resilience leading to them winning their first ever League Leaders Shield, after an astonishing comeback win against Saints at Magic Weekend.

That game highlighted the attitude of Steve McNamara’s team, coming back from 30-12 down with seven minutes to play to win in Golden Point.

Sam Tomkins is the newly crowned Man of Steel, and you feel he’ll be integral to how the Dragons go in this fixture.

Catalans enter as the eight-point underdogs, and to win outright are 9/4. However, you feel to stand any chance in this game, the French side need to take the lead early and control the tempo. Dragons to score first, lead at half time, and win the match is 5/1.

It is set to be another fantastic occasion for the Super League after what has been a challenging year, and while it may mark the end of an era for some players departing at the end of the season, it gives players such as Lachlan Coote or James Maloney the chance to depart from their teams at the very highest level.
