Premier League Darts Night 2 preview: Van Gerwen favourite to bounce back after Belfast

| BY News Team

After his loss in the final on night one, Michael van Gerwen remains the favourite going into night two of the Darts Premier League in Cardiff.

We preview his quarter-final tie with Dimitri van den Bergh as well two of the other three scintillating matchups.

Michael Smith v Jonny Clayton

Michael Smith goes into this fixture as the heavy favourite despite a poor performance by his standards on the first night of the Darts Premier League.

Losing to Michael van Gerwen 6-3, Smith will be hoping he gives himself a better chance of victory this time around with a much better performance in the first match. Never looking up to it against Van Gerwen in Belfast, the PDC world number one will certainly feel he can perform better and looking at his odds for victory in this match, it is likely he will.

At 8/15 to make it through here, it is unlikely we will see a close tie, but nobody will have expected his match against Van Gerwen to have been so one-sided, so perhaps this one won’t be as clear-cut as the odds suggest.

Jonny Clayton was also knocked out in the quarter-final in Belfast, and he too will be looking to improve and rediscover the winning form that has seen him climb to seventh in the world. He is the heavy underdog at 6/4 to win this matchup and is 12/1 to win the night outright so it might be tough for him here unless he can bring his A game.

Nathan Aspinall v Peter Wright

This is another pair that will be hoping to improve on their previous rounds’ efforts which saw them both eliminated before the final. Nathan Aspinall is the underdog at 13/10, even though he made it to the semi-final in Belfast while Peter Wright was knocked out in the first round.

Regardless of his mishaps at his last attempt, Wright will be looking to make amends and judging by how well he has played since the start of 2022, it won’t be long before he escapes this dip in form. He is much shorter in the betting at 8/13 to claim the win, though he may be reminded of his cruel dumping out of the Grand Slam of Darts at the group stage by Aspinall in November.

If Wright manages to push his recent loss to the Englishman out of his head, he has a good chance of winning here if he hits his top level for long enough may even have the dexterity to make it to the final and win outright at 5/1.

Aspinall will have something to say about that, and we have seen him play at his ruthless best countless times this year, so it is hard to write him off completely. At 13/10, he offers good value and a punt that will not feel like a shot in the dark.

Michael van Gerwen v Dimitri Van den Bergh

The world number three, Michael van Gerwen just missed out on first place in Belfast and will more than fancy his chances at making amends with a handsome paycheque.

He is the favourite to win night two outright at 7/4, and looking at how close he came to a victory, losing just 6-5 to Chris Dobey in a very tight final, it is understandable that he is heavy favourite In this matchup.

The dynamic Dutchman is just 1/3 to triumph over Dimitri Van den Bergh and progress to the semi final for the second Darts Premier League night in a row and it isn’t off the cards that he will win flawlessly at 16/1 and claim a 6-0 whitewash.

His opponent is 5/2 to claim the victory but looking at his recent form, losing four of his last six matches, he might have his work cut out against the 148-time PDC title winner.

Van Gerwen is only 10/1 to achieve a 170 checkout.
