How does Devin Haney win the fight?
Control the outside and pile up the points
Undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney is a firm favourite to defeat three-weight world champion Vasyl Lomachenko, whose best days, at 35, look to be behind him.
Although only an inch taller than Loma, Haney is the bigger and stronger man at the weight and will also enjoy a significant reach advantage.
A natural featherweight, Loma has struggled against bigger fighters in the past, losing to Orlando Salido in 2014 and Teofimo Lopez in 2020.
A masterful technician, Haney will seek to control the pace of the fight on the outside with his excellent jab, handspeed and ring generalship, as he did so effectively in both fights against George Kambosos.
The jab also allows Haney to stabilise Lomachenko and neutralise the Ukrainian’s outstanding footwork.
From behind the jab, Haney will bring the straight right hand, often so effective against southpaws, punishing Loma when the older fighter looks to close the distance.

How does Vasyl Lomachenko win the fight?
Set a pace that Haney can’t live with
Can Loma cap his Hall of Fame career with one more memorable victory?
To pull it off, he’ll need to take Haney out of his comfort zone by setting a high pace and throwing lots of eye-catching punches.
Haney isn’t a busy fighter (Loma averages 59.5 punches thrown per round to Haney’s 45.1), preferring to control the fight on the outside with his accurate jab.
If Loma can use his excellent footwork to work the angles and upset Haney’s rhythm, the younger man may lack the experience required to solve that puzzle and find himself drawn into deep water.
Loma can also take heart from Haney’s fight with shared opponent Jorge Linares, who raised questions about the champ’s chin, wobbling Haney in the 10th round before going down to a points defeat.
Vasyl Lomachenko, key stats:
- A two-time Olympic gold medallist with an amateur record of 396 wins and one defeat
- Tied Saensak Muangsurin’s record for winning a world title in the fewest fights (3)
- Ranked the world’s seventh best active boxer, pound for pound, by The Ring
- Four of his last fights have gone the distance, including the 2020 unanimous points loss to Teofimo Lopez

Our verdict: How we think Devin Haney v Vasyl Lomachenko will play out
It’s hard to see how a diminished Loma wins this fight and the odds reflect that.
Loma doesn’t look to have the power to trouble Haney and may no longer have the legs to work his way inside the champ’s excellent jab.
Haney’s likeliest route to victory is via the judges’ scorecards. The champ isn’t a huge puncher. Plus, he’s risk averse and doesn’t feel any pressure to give the fans spectacular finishes.
If Haney does get the win, it could set up a mouth-watewring clash with Gervonta Davis that will determine who is the king of the lightweights.
Key stat:
- You have to go back to May 2019 for Haney’s last KO victory, against the unfancied Antonio Moran.
