Who will be England’s next manager?

After eight years in charge, Gareth Southgate stepped down from the role of England manager.
In what was a hugely successful term in charge of the national team, Southgate reached two finals and a semi-final, which is the best record we’ve seen of a manager for years. Unfortunately, he couldn’t quite clinch that major title that he deserved, but there’s no doubt he has changed what it means to play for England.
Players look like they enjoy their time in the national shirt now and believe that they can actually go all the way in a tournament, and Southgate’s shoes will definitely be hard to fill.
Our list below looks at the most likely replacements for Southgate.

Eddie Howe – 5/2
The market leader is current Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe. The Englishman’s name has long been courted as a replacement for when Southgate stepped down, and it seems a realistic progression for the manager. His tenure at Newcastle has been a success overall, qualifying for the Champions League in his first full season. This previous season hasn’t been the best with Newcastle failing to make an impression in Europe and falling out of the qualifying places, but it’s clear that they were lacking in terms of squad depth to be able to compete across several competitions.
Whilst it seems Howe is settled at the club and he’s publicly cooled rumours of him switching to the national team saying he hasn’t been approached, if the FA were to make an advance to secure his services, there’s no reason why Howe wouldn’t be interested in the role. It’s not often the opportunity will come around, as seen with the length of Southgate’s term in charge, so he would have to take it under serious consideration. The England squad is ready to win now, and will only get better, so it would be hard to see him turning it down if he is the FA’s man.
Graham Potter – 11/4
Next in is Graham Potter at 11/4. Currently out of work since his stint as Chelsea boss, Potter is clearly waiting for the right opportunity to come along before he steps back into the technical area. Whilst his tenure at Chelsea hasn’t done wonders for his reputation, Potter’s managerial ability still speaks for itself, and he was considered to be one of the Premier League’s best before he took the job at Chelsea. He’s long been rumoured to be next in line for England, and his appointment would be exciting for the players and fans alike, with the style his teams tend to take.
Lee Carsley – 7/2
Current England U21 boss Lee Carsley is 7/2 to charter the same course as Gareth Southgate did when stepping into the role of senior England manager. Carsley’s U21 side won the U21 equivalent of the Euros, displaying impressive defensive solidity whilst playing expansive football offensively and it would be exciting to see how his style would with the current members of the senior team, some of which he has worked with within the youth setup. The FA have shown they like to recruit internally, and Carsley may be next in line here.
