William Saliba

It’s difficult to argue that Arsenal’s William Saliba isn’t among the best centre backs in the Premier League after his beginning to the 2024-2025 season, and he is now a 20/1 shot to be this year’s PFA Player of the Year.

He is the centrepiece of a refined Arsenal back four that have become impenetrable and one of the biggest reasons why they remains title contenders despite being pipped by Manchester City for a second consecutive year last summer.

Saliba has struck up a brilliant partnership with Gabriel and the pair are undoubtedly one of the leading centre back partnerships in the league.

Virgil van Dijk

A mainstay amongst the best defenders in the division is Liverpool centre back Virgil van Dijk.

Now 33 years of age and in the final year of his contract at the club, this may well be one of the last years of van Dijk’s time at Anfield, but he still looks at the top of his game.

Now just 5/2 to win this season’s title, not many pundits gave Liverpool a chance this season after the departure of Jürgen Klopp, but they haven’t missed a beat under new boss Arne Slot and sit top of the Premier League table after eight games.

Van Dijk has been at the heart of it once again at the heart of the defence and Liverpool could further surprise fans this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Another Liverpool inclusion on the list in the form of English full back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Undoubtedly one of the best and most talented players in the league, Trent is another player whose time at Anfield may be up at the season amid contract negotiations.

A right-back by name, his ability with the ball makes him so much more, often stepping into midfield and orchestrating games.

He’s developed into one of the best players in the world on current form and if Liverpool are to go all the way, he will be a big part of it.

Micky Van de Ven

Tottenham’s Micky Van de Ven has had a brilliant start to the season and looks to be developing into one of the best defenders in the league.

Equipped with storming pace and sharp defensive awareness, he’s another who has struck up a partnership with his counterpart Cristian Romero.

Aged just 23, Van de Ven looks like he’s here to stay at the top level and Tottenham have a serious asset on their hands.

Gabriel

The partner of William Saliba at Arsenal, Gabriel deserves his own place on the list.

An esteemed defender that has developed into one of the best centre backs in the league, Gabriel has also emerged as a big offensive threat.

Becoming well known for the threats they pose at set pieces after the appointment of set piece coach Nicolas Jover, Gabriel looks to be their talisman at offensive set pieces.

He has already scored twice this season and has come close to many more – keep an eye on him at set pieces this season.
