Despite their defeat in the previous Test, England are a 17/20 favourites to win the Test, with Pakistan 6/4. The winner here wins the series, as well as the fixture being the last for England on the subcontinent for nearly two years. If they can get back to a performance nearer the one they displayed in the first Test, then they might just be good value favourites.
Match preview
The focus from both sides on spin from the second Test doesn’t look to have changed here, as several spin bowlers have been named in the line-ups for the third Test.
England have again named a squad equipped with several bowlers, leading first innings wicket taker for England Jack Leach returns as well as a call-up for Rehan Ahmed, who has impressed for his country on subcontinental soil. He looks a good price to be the top bowler for England in their first innings at 7/2 due to his previous form.
Nauman Ali is off the back of a sparkling second innings in the previous Test, taking eight wickets off England which was in the end, their undoing. He’s in great form and he looks well set to go again here with the conditions suiting his spin bowling – the 11/8 about him to be the top bowler for Pakistan looks good value considering his streak in the second innings of the last Test. It’s worth noting that he was the top wicket taker from either team in the last game and there’s no reason to believe that he cannot display a repeat of that form here once again.
The leading batsmen from both sides will need to be well equipped and ready to deal with some tricky spin bowling, and there is no man better for England than Joe Root, the now leading Test run scorer for his country.
Widely considered one of the best in the world at facing any ball, he is particularly adept at facing a turning ball and whilst we likely won’t see the record-breaking level of run scoring as we did in the first Test, he appeals to have a good innings at the crease.
His price of 27/10 to be the top England batsman in the first innings appeals if he is to continue his fine form and go well once again here. The EVS for him to achieve 50 runs looks quite strong, and for the braver 100 looks achievable at 11/4.
