Previous encounters
Matches between England and New Zealand are few and far between, with only five games played in the last six years – however, two of those games came earlier on in 2024.
As part of England’s summer tour of Japan and New Zealand, England encountered the All Blacks twice which both went the way of New Zealand with both played on their home turf. The first match was closely matched with New Zealand emerging 16-15 victors, courtesy of two important three-point goals from Damian McKenzie.
The second victory was far clearer cut for the All Blacks as they defeated England 24-17, with Damian McKenzie spearheading the side once again, scoring 14 of their points.
Match preview
As a result of the dominance shown over England by the All Blacks, they are installed as the 8/13 favourites in the tie here, with England 11/8. The return to home soil will help England but they still need to overcome the two previous defeats to record a first win over the All Blacks since 2019.
The England squad has undergone drastic change since the World Cup semi-final defeat last year, with several talented young players being brought into the set up. However, there has also been turnover in the coaching setup, with defensive coach Felix Jones departing the role just seven months after joining.
Meanwhile, preparation seems to be a lot more fluent in the New Zealand camp. Coach Scott Robertson’s stint in the job couldn’t have started much better after he led the All Blacks to back victories over England.
England came so close earlier in the year to notching a first win in New Zealand since 2003, leading at half-time before just falling short as their opponents fought back to defend the record once again.
The last time the teams met one another, it was an enthralling 25-25 draw between the two after a flurry of late England tries. If England were to be victorious this time, it would be only their ninth Test victory over the All Blacks, having not won one since 2012!
It looks stacked against England once again here and an argument can be made that there should probably be a bigger disparity between the two sides here, therefore 10/11 about New Zealand -3 in the match handicap market looks a good bet. England have proven they are unable to convert from a winning position against New Zealand and despite the return to home soil, they look to be too strong for them here once again.
