The ATP Finals

The ATP Finals is a unique event compared to many other traditional tennis tournaments. The top seven players from the ATP Race qualify automatically for the event, with the eighth and final player selected from those ranked eighth to 12th, provided they have won a major title that year.

The format, as mentioned, differs from traditional tennis tournaments. Instead of a classic knockout style, the eight players are split into two groups of four and must play each member of their group, resulting in three group stage matches each.

The top two from each group progress to the semi-final round, with the winners of each semi-final advancing to the final, where the ATP Finals champion is then crowned.

Under this format, it is mathematically impossible for a player to progress to the semi-finals if they lose two matches within the group stage. However, no past winner of this event has ever lost a match in their three group stage games, which may be something to keep in mind.

Record seven-time winner Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the event this week due to injury. He had already automatically qualified for the event as the sixth most successful player on the ATP Tour this season, which has allowed Andrey Rublev (16/1) to take a place in the tournament.

Tournament Favourites

The slight favourite for the tournament outright is Jannik Sinner at 6/4, and it’s not difficult to see why. Over 3,000 points clear at the top of the rankings, Sinner has had an exceptional year, winning the US and Australian Opens as well as several ATP events. He has also won on a similar hard-court surface as he’ll face here, and he has the advantage of avoiding main market rival Carlos Alcaraz until the knockout stages.

Another player who’s had a stellar season is the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. The Wimbledon winner is priced at 7/4 for the tournament, and with both players’ impressive seasons, it’s difficult to separate them. Following in the footsteps of tennis greats such as Federer, Nadal, and Murray once seemed daunting, but these two rising talents promise an exciting rivalry to watch for years to come.

While the two market leaders will be tough to beat, several previous ATP Finals competitors are in this year’s competition. Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev are both priced at 15/2 and may be worth considering for each-way bets as the only two former champions in the field. Both players bring more experience than Sinner and Alcaraz, though their seasons have not been as prolific.
