The Top Five Longest Losing Runs in Premier League History
After the surprising four-game losing streak for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Premier League, it’s proven that no team is averse to a sudden downturn in form in one of the world’s hardest leagues.

Sunderland – 20 straight losses
The longest losing run in Premier League history is Sunderland’s dismal 20 game streak, which spanned from the beginning of 2003 to the end of 2005.
With 15 losses in a row at the back end of their 2002/2003 Premier League campaign, Sunderland finished 20th in the table and were relegated to the Championship after recording a total of 27 losses in the 38-game campaign.
In a season where they won four games, they went through nearly as many managers with managers Peter Reid and Howard Wilkinson both shown the door by March, Mick McCarthy arrived at the Stadium of Light to try and turn the situation around.
The final five games of their loss streak came at the start of the 2005/2006 campaign after winning promotion the season before, a season in which they were relegated with 15 points and McCarthy was dismissed in February 2006.
Norwich – 16 straight losses
Norwich is next in the list, suffering 16 straight defeats. This came in the COVID-19 season which saw Premier League football postponed for several months, with Norwich’s first loss coming in March 2020 and their second loss in June 2020.
What followed was 18 straight defeats running until September of 2021. In the process, manager at the time Daniel Farke became the first manager in the Premier League to suffer 15 consecutive defeats. When the duck was finally broken, courtesy of an victory away at Brentford, Farke was fired by the club.
Aston Villa – 11 straight losses
Next in the list is Aston Villa, who lost 11 games in a row in the 2015/2016 season. They were relegated from the Premier League, finishing in 20th and going through four different managers.
This was a very different Villa side to the team we see challenging in the Champions League nowadays, with the next time Villa were promoted to the Premier League, they didn’t look back and became the European superpower we see of them today.
Fulham – 9 straight losses
The final two teams are joint on nine, with Fulham one of the two.
Another side who has established themselves with the Premier League in recent years, Fulham lacked that stability, which saw bouncing them up and down between the Championship.
Their run was the ultimate blow in their survival battle, with the final 4-1 loss to Watford the result seeing them ultimately relegated. Incidentally, they bucked that trend winning their next three games.
Sunderland – 9 straight losses
Joint with Fulham is Sunderland.
Their second inclusion on the list, Sunderland’s streak of nine losses came in the same season as the end of their aforementioned 20 losses streak, in what amounted to be a dismal and forgettable campaign for the Black Cats.
