Inothewayurthinkin – 7/1

The current favourite for the race is the Gavin Cromwell-trained Inothewayurthinkin. Currently rated 160, he has been well found in the market and looks to be the type that would improve for the extended four-miles-and-two-furlongs trip.

He has been supplemented for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which shows the esteem in which connections hold him. He’d do well to beat Galopin Des Champs as he goes in pursuit of his third win in the race, but he looks a great alternative to the favourite. If he were to hit the frame or even win the race, the 7/1 on offer would surely come under pressure provided he doesn’t find the Aintree showpiece come too soon after his exertions around Cheltenham.

Iroko – 12/1

Another horse owned by JP McManus is the Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerreiro trained Iroko, who is 12/1 for the race.

He’s completely unexposed over extreme distances however his displays in his races this season suggest that the step up to the maximum trip will see him to best effect. He’s into the race off a mark of 152, which looks fair especially considering his most recent run behind Grey Dawning. Whilst he was second best on the day, that is no disgrace against a horse who was long considered a great chance for the premier Group One chases on the calendar, and who should probably be lining up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup – you can’t argue he wouldn’t have a chance if he did.

He looked unsuited by the track at Kelso, which is quite sharp in nature and was outpaced before once again staying on to record a two-and-a-half-length defeat, his jumping held up well throughout and a return to Aintree where his standout piece of form, a second in the Grade One Mildmay Novices’ Chase in 2024, should suit.

Vanillier – 33/1

The test of the National is a unique one, so it may be worth getting a horse onside who has experience in the race, Vanillier fits the bill.

He would need a few to come out, however if he were to turn up on the day, the 33/1 on offer would look very appealing about a horse with the form he has. Having ran in the race twice, his first appearance is by far the standout piece of form from his career. Finishing second to Corach Rambler, he had a troubled passage having to come through traffic and from a long way back. On another day he may well have won but it was no disgrace bumping into Corach Rambler, who had already notched the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival that same year.

The same Corach Rambler went on to run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the following Grand National for which he was sent off 15/2, there was no doubt how well handicapped in the 2023 race. Vanillier was more underwhelming on his return to the race in 2024, only achieving 14th but it looked a tall order of a career high weight. He’s back down to a rating of 144 this time around, incidentally three pounds lower than the 2023 race where he went so close. His most recent appearance showed he still retained his ability when easily winning a Cross Country Chase at Punchestown. He could be one to keep an eye on.
