Next Pope Odds & Leading Contenders

Luis Antonio Tagle is the new favourite with William Hill to succeed the late Pope Francis as the next Pope, after overtaking Pietro Parolin in the betting.

The Filipino prelate has been supported into 9/4 from 3/1 and now stands as the leading bookmaker’s favourite to be next Pope, ahead of long-time market leader Pietro Parolin at 5/2.

Peter Turkson (5/1) and Matteo Zuppi (11/2) are next in the market, with Péter Erdő (7/1) and Pierbattista Pizzaballa (8/1) slightly further back.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “With only a few days to go before the conclave to elect the next Pope begins there’s been a shake up in our betting market, with Luis Antonio Tagle assuming favouritism at 9/4, having been backed in from 3/1.

“Tagle would become the first Asian pontiff if elected and has overtaken long-time favourite Pietro Parolin in the market at 5/2.

“Peter Turkson has also been popular at 5/1, while Matteo Zuppi has shortened into 11/2 from 7/1 in the last few days as speculation continues to abound.”

Pietro Parolin is the early favourite to succeed the late Pope Francis as the next Pope following his passing earlier this week.

Parolin, the current Vatican City Secretary of State, has been installed as the leading contender at 9/4 in the betting to be elected as the next Pope, with Luis Antonio Tagle priced at 3/1 to become the first Asian pontiff.

Meanwhile, Matteo Zuppi is a 6/1 shot with William Hill and punters looking to back Peter Turkson can do so at the same price in our next Pope betting market.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “There’s already plenty of speculation on who the Vatican will announce as the next Pope to follow Pope Francis, and currently we make the Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, our favourite at 9/4.

“Luis Antonio Tagle is second in our market at 3/1 and would become the first Asian Pope in history, while Matteo Zuppi and Peter Turkson are both priced at 6/1.”

Many believe that Parolin is the natural heir to Pope Francis’ legacy and he has been well supported in recent days, though no official announcement has been made.

Senior figures from the Catholic Church will arrive in Italy and head to the Vatican City to begin the process for selecting the next Pope and the papal conclave is of significant importance.

The process of selecting the next representative of God on Earth is highly secretive and it has been relatively unchanged for over 800 years, with no exact timeframe on how long it may take to select a new Head of the Catholic Church.
