Jane Mangan’s William Hill blog: Royal Ascot 2025 Day Five Best Bets

William Hill ambassador Jane Mangan is back with her best bets for the fifth and final day of Royal Ascot, including the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes.
Ascot, Saturday
The Chesham Stakes (2:30pm) kicks off the action at Royal Ascot on Saturday. I like Treanmor, a two-million-guineas yearling who absolutely bolted up on debut at Newmarket – I loved that performance. He looked a powerful colt on the day, and he’s certain to improve for the step up in trip, so seven furlongs should only bring out a better run. It doesn’t look a vintage renewal, and I think Treanmor will keep the Chesham at home.
The Hardwicke Stakes (3:05pm) is a fascinating contest; Ghostwriter is finally going to get his ground in Europe. He will relish the quick conditions. Sold on Monday night for two million pounds to Amo Racing, I wouldn’t be too concerned about his run behind Los Angeles in the Tattersalls Gold Cup – it rained at the Curragh that day, and he clearly needs fast ground. I think he can repay some of that price tag in the Hardwicke!
The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (3:40pm) over six furlongs has been won for the last two years by Khaadem. He’s not running this year, and I like the look of Lazzat. This race is always a test of pace – he was a smart three-year-old last season, notably winning the Prix Maurice de Gheest. I was impressed with his performance in Listed company last time out at Chantilly, where he made all to win by nearly six lengths. While he doesn’t have to make the running here, he’s comfortable going a strong gallop. I think Jerome Reynier can get on the board here and continue a brilliant week for Wathnan Racing and James Doyle.
The Wokingham Stakes (5:00pm) is, as always, a tricky puzzle to solve, but I like the chances of More Thunder. Drawn high in stall 23 – which looks to be the place to be – he’s won well on both of his starts for William Haggas this season. He did brilliantly to get up in the shadow of the post at Newmarket last time out. He’s been given a six-pound rise for that win, but I don’t believe a mark of 98 is his ceiling. I think he can give Tom Marquand and William Haggas another Royal Ascot handicap success.
The Golden Gates Stakes (5:35pm) is full of unexposed types, and I’m siding with one from left field. Roosevelt was touted as a Derby prospect last year before he had even run, but he was disappointing on debut before winning at Leopardstown next time out. He was underwhelming on his handicap debut again, but the handicapper hasn’t budged and left him on the same mark. I think a mile and a quarter will suit him well, and with Ryan Moore picking him over Rock Of Cashel, he’s the one for me.
In the final race, the Queen Alexandra Stakes (6:10pm), I’ve landed on Sober for Ryan Moore and Willie Mullins. He’s a fascinating contender – a two-time Group Two winner in 2023 for André Fabre, he signed off last season with a win at Clairefontaine and has since been off the Flat. That said, he’s been kept busy over hurdles and won on debut in a novice hurdle last time out. He was bought for €115,000 from France and has a lovely pedigree, being by Camelot. When Ryan Moore and Willie Mullins team up, it’s always worth taking notice – I think he’s the one to be with in the last.
