Arsenal – 1/2
Leading the race for Viktor Gyokeres currently is Arsenal at odds of 1/2.
The North London club are clearly in need of an established centre forward, after a clear deficiency following Kai Havertz’s injury last season. There’s no doubt this is the difference between the Gunners and major silverware. The team boasts creativity and control in midfield but have lacked a consistent, clinical finisher to convert chances in key moments. To truly challenge Manchester City and succeed in Europe, Arsenal need a striker who can deliver 20+ goals a season and provide a focal point in big matches.
Gyokeres can be that player for them. He looks an ideal fit for the type of centre forward that Mikel Arteta would usually target. Physical, hard-working and strong with brilliant goal-scoring ability, evidenced by his season at Sporting.
His hold-up play is also a particular strength, which would allow him to link up well with players such as Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard in build up whilst providing a significantly higher goal threat than anyone else we’ve seen up top at the Emirates.
His price of 1/2 seems short but with Gyokeres vowing to not return to the club until a reported deal with Arsenal is done, this deal could be quickly accelerated in coming days. Arsenal also look to be interested in Benjamin Sesko as another option at striker, so it’s worth keeping tabs on this potential deal as any advancement with the Leipzig man may well see the Gyokeres deal become less likely.
Manchester United – 5/2
Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are also in the hunt for Gyokeres, as they look to further reinforce and improve their options up front.
They do have greater depth in the position than market leaders Arsenal, with Rasmus Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Chido Martin Obi all playing a part at centre forward in the previous season but it’s clear if United want to reach the level they are aiming for, they need to improve in this area.
Gyokeres has to be one of the frontrunners on the shortlist if they want to take the side to the next level. Even though it seems Arsenal hold sway over a potential deal for the Swede, as mentioned, they are also looking at Sesko from RB Leipzig and if they are to complete a deal for him – the door is open for another team to make a move for Gyokeres. United could be that side.
Other teams in the race
The betting suggests that Arsenal and Manchester United have it between themselves in the race for Gyokeres, however there are a few other teams that are in with a shout of securing his services for the start of the new season.
Juventus remain one of Italy’s powerhouses despite a disappointing couple of years, they cannot be ruled out at 7/1.
Napoli, conversely, are arguably the best team around in Italy, following their league win in Serie A. They’re a serious proposition for any big talent in world football and may be worth considering at 18/1.
