Terry Phelan exclusively to William Hill: “Next season will be the most competitive title race in years”.

Terry Phelan exclusively to William Hill:
Former Chelsea, Everton Man City and Republic of Ireland full back Terry Phelan talks exclusively to William Hill. Terry talks about Chelsea’s Club World Cup win and how this sets them up for the new Premier League season and also looks at how Manchester City can perform this new season. We also cover Terry’s insight on Everton & experience playing for Republic of Ireland in World Cup and under Head Coach Jack Charlton.
As a former Chelsea player, tell us your view of Chelsea’s Club World Cup Win and impact of Cole Palmer?
Terry: Chelsea’s Club World Cup win will do a lot for the Clubs bank balance. The prize money for this tournament was huge, but let’s see how they start the new Premier League season. Credit to Chelsea though, they went about the tournament professionally and maturely. They took it seriously and were able to get the new players signed to bed in quickly.
Special mention to Cole Palmer, who once again delivered on the big stage. The win can help Chelsea next season giving the squad belief they can compete for the Premier League title and with new signings Delap and Pedro making a quick impact, this bodes really well.
I expect Chelsea to compete for the Premier League title. Their squad depth is very good and this should enable them to sustain a bigger challenge for the title next season.
How good is Cole Palmer and can he become an elite player in World football?
Terry: For a start, Manchester city was mad to let Cole Palmer leave. I know they have Phil Foden, but Cole Palmer is a special talent. He was right to want more game time, thus that obviously was the determining factor on him leaving, but this could prove a bad move in the long term.
Looking at Cole Palmer, yes, he can become an elite player. He must continue to work on his game, keep performing week in week out for Chelsea and delivering big moments like he has been doing. He is a big game player as showed this by his impact for England in the last Euros, scoring a fine goal in the final against Spain. He also delivered for Chelsea in European Final and then again at Club World Cup Final.
So, should he continue to make a big impact both domestically and for England, he can become world class for sure.
Manchester city are rebuilding now with influx of new players and some of the old guard leaving in Kyle Walker & Kevin De Bruyne. How will they get on next season?
Terry: Pep has delivered magnificently for Manchester City but now has a challenge to get Manchester City back to Premier League Champions. With Liverpool and Arsenal investing and Chelsea also ready to Challenge, it will be interesting to see how Manchester City perform next season.
There is so much talent in the squad you can’t underestimate the quality Manchester City have ad Rodri now comes back into the team after injury. He was a significant miss for the club last season after he got injured and this showed defensively where Manchester City struggled.
I think Pep will work on this during pre-season to sure up the defensive side of the team as offensively, there is no doubt, Manchester City have plenty of fire power to cause every team problems.
I see Manchester City challenging for the title and if they can improve defensively, there is no reason they can’t get back to top spot, but I think next season will be the most competitive title race in years.
Terry; you played for Everton during your career and the Club now enter a new stadium and David’ Moyes first full season back in charge. How can they perform?
Firstly, I would have loved to play under David Moyes. He did a brilliant job at Everton first time around and then look what he achieved at West Ham with many top half finishes and then a European trophy as well.
Now back at Everton, I think David can bring plenty of smiles back to the fans and I would say they can push on from previous seasons and now only secure Premier League safety a lot earlier but push on for a top half finish.
Players want to play for Moyes and you can see he always has a good coaching team around him. With a lot of experienced players in the squad, Moyes can lean on these ahead of the new season.
Movin into the new Stadium can be a fresh start for the Club and Moyes can use this to his advantage to get them playing well at home and with a strong and passionate fan base, if Everton can start winning games at home, then this can be a big boost for them.
Terry, tell us about your experience playing for Republic of Ireland and under Head Coach Jack Charlton and memories of World Cup 1994
Terry: Jack was a World Cup winner with England. There was uproar when he took over but, as time went on he changed the life of every household in Ireland. We had amazing player in Brady, Whelan, Stapleton, McGrath, Townsend, Lawrenson, Staunton… the list goes on. The first year was tough for Jack with Ireland, but once he weathered the storm, you look at the 2nd year and Euro 88 where Ireland were put on the map. Jack bought the country together throughout his time as Ireland Manager and this was huge!
Memories of 94 were that it was super-hot, but we knew we had a squad to compete and we knew how to play on the big stage. This was a great team we had. Most of us were playing in England. We were a family, we stuck together, we had loads of fun outside of the pitch as well. Players such as Mcgrath, Bonner, Irwin were so important. We had leaders all over the pitch. Sheridan was immense, Townsend was a work horse, Staunton had so much grit and determination. We had the class of Houghton to score the goal v Italy.
Finally, tell us what you’re up to now within football
Terry: I have been in India for a while and enjoying my life here. Keeping fit, eating well and also coaching football here. The passion I have for football is massive and to see the talent here want to learn and grow their football is evident. I hope one day that you can see players from here play in Europe and I am doing my best to see if any of them can make it. For me, I have the hunger to coach so you never know what could happen in the future whether I come back to Europe or not.
