League 2 Predictions Today – Saturday 20th December 2025

League 2 Football Preview

The top two face off at Meadow Lane this Saturday afternoon, both teams strongly backed in the football betting to secure promotion next May. It should be a humdinger.

Elsewhere, Swindon and MK Dons prepare for encounters against inferior fare, and games they’re expected to win, or at least that’s what the League Two betting tells us.

Bromley v Grimsby Town

  • Kick-Off: Sat, 12:30
  • Rankings: 4th vs 14th

Bromley preview: Unbeaten at Hayes Lane all season the Ravens will strongly fancy themselves against troubled Grimsby. A win-to-nil away at Accrington last Saturday was more comprehensive than the 0-1 result suggested while Mitch Pinnock boasts a goal involvement in each of his last three outings.

Grimsby preview: The Mariners are in crisis territory, their seven-game winless streak spiralling them from a play-off spot to mid-table. A new goalkeeper in January is a must with Christy Pym bottom for save percentage and saves per 90 in League Two.

Score prediction: 2-1.

Notts County v Walsall

  • Kick-Off: Sat, 12:30
  • Rankings: 2nd vs 1st

County preview: Whoever is victorious at Meadow Lane will be top at Christmas and the hosts will once again turn to the prolific partnership of Alassana Jatta and Matthew Dennis – the latter dropping deeper in recent games – for their goals.

Between them the pair have fired 51.5% of County’s league haul in 2025/26.

Walsall preview: The Saddlers make for a somewhat odd league-leader, too prone to off days such as we witnessed last week at home to Shrewsbury. So often this occurs against sides they are superior to in quality.

What can’t be questioned is their track record when facing direct promotion rivals this term. To date they have played Swindon, Bromley, MK Dons, Salford and Chesterfield and won out every time.

Score prediction: 2-2.

Barnet v Salford City

  • Kick-Off: Sat, 15:00
  • Rankings: 13th vs 6th

Barnet preview: Expect the keepers to be busy at the Hive Stadium, with Barnet registering the highest number of shots on target in the league and Salford third on the list.

The Bees may have gone down 3-1 at Chesterfield last weekend but they were competitive throughout.

Salford preview: Two of Salford’s last three fixtures have seen them come out on top of a seven goal thriller and while their back-line is probably not secure enough to mount a promotion push they are at least good value in the entertainment stakes.

Just one away win in six doesn’t bode well for Karl Robinson’s side here.

Score prediction: 2-1.

Colchester United v Newport County

  • Kick-Off: Sat, 15:00
  • Rankings: 12th vs 24th

Colchester preview: Not too much can be gauged from Colchester’s 3-4 reverse at Salford last week. It was a basketball encounter with plenty of chances created. It could have gone either way.

The bigger picture tells a more accurate story, that the U’s are on the up under Danny Cowley, slowly, steadily. They are a decent outside shot to finish in the play-off spots come May.

Newport preview: The Exiles may be a slightly improved proposition under Christian Fuchs but they remain winless across his four games in charge, conceding every 40 minutes in the process.

No team has conceded more first-half goals in the fourth tier this term.

Score prediction: 2-0.

Fleetwood Town v Gillingham

  • Kick-Off: Sat, 15:00
  • Rankings: 11th vs 10th

Fleetwood preview: The hosts have got on the scoresheet in all-but-two of their league fixtures this season and often these goals have helped turn the tide. No team has picked up more points from losing positions.

Gillingham preview: The Gills head north on the back of five consecutive draws, a habit that is clearly frustrating Gareth Ainsworth in the dug-out.

“We chucked two points away,” he complained after his side relinquished a 2-0 half-time lead against Barrow last week. “We looked tired.”

That’s a worrying admission with a hectic Christmas period forthcoming.

Score prediction: 2-1.

Harrogate Town v Milton Keynes Dons

  • Kick-Off: Sat, 15:00
  • Ranking: 22nd vs 5th

Harrogate preview: The Sulphurites’ may be showing some fight on the road but at Wetherby Road they are routinely finding themselves outclassed. Five consecutive home losses – four of them to nil – emphasises this.

MK Dons preview: Thirteen of the Dons’ last 16 encounters have finished with both teams scoring but Paul Warne won’t be overly troubled by that.

Fancied by many pre-season to do well and so far justifying that backing, the Dons are the league’s leading goal-scorers, firing 1.9 goals per 90. An injury to Nathaniel Mendez-Laing however is a serious concern going forward.

Score prediction: 0-2.

Oldham Athletic v Tranmere Rovers

  • Kick-Off: Sat, 15:00
  • Rankings: 16th vs 15th

Oldham preview: Back-to-back 0-1 reverses has stalled any momentum the Latics built up from decent results prior. Defensively they remain sounder than most but Micky Mellon’s men have failed to convert in three of their last four.

Tranmere preview: No team have scored more second-half goals than Rovers this term though their 82nd minute strike last week was merely a consolation. They were 4-0 down at that point, enduring a heavy loss to Crewe that few saw coming.

Score prediction: 1-1.

Shrewsbury Town v Chesterfield

  • Kick-Off: Sat, 15:00
  • Rankings: 20th vs 7th

Shrewsbury preview: The Shrews were impressive at Walsall last week while they have built up a head of steam at home in recent months, unbeaten in five and winning three of them. A pitiful 6.1% chance conversion rate however continues to undermine any progress made.

Chesterfield preview: A much-needed victory over Barnet last weekend returns the Spirities to the play-off places and perhaps puts an end to a prolonged spell of stuttering draws.

It’s worth noting that their shot-count has increased of late, averaging 12.6 per 90 across their last six, compared to 10.3 per 90 in their six games prior.

Score prediction: 1-2.

Swindon Town v Crawley Town

  • Kick-Off: Sat, 15:00
  • Rankings: 3rd vs 21st

Swindon preview: 21-year-old midfielder Joe Snowdon is coming to the core at the County Ground, registering five goal involvements in his last four starts. Winger Finley Munroe meanwhile was superb last Saturday as Swindon easily dispensed with Bristol Rovers, as too was Ollie Clarke in the middle of the park.

All of which is to say that Swindon will likely run the show in midfield on Saturday, a sixth home win of the season coming from there.

Crawley preview: The Red Devils may reside just one point above the bottom two but they are dangerous going forward, as 2.1 goals per 90 in their last seven games illustrates. A meagre three clean sheets kept all season has been their undoing.

Score prediction: 4-1.
