From Liverpool To Rome: Expected Cash Bet On Grand National Would Stretch Distance From Aintree To Italian Capital
Leading bookmaker William Hill estimate that over £150 million will be bet on this Saturday’s Randox Grand National, which if laid end-to-end in £20 notes would cover approximately 650 miles.
The race meeting’s official betting partner is expecting more than six times the amount bet on last month’s Cheltenham Gold Cup to be wagered on the National, with one of the worst results being Panic Attack – as things stand.
Trained by Dan Skelton, who’s firmly expected to be crowned Champion Trainer this season, Panic Attack has seen her odds shrink from 66/1 to 10/1 over the course of the season. She would also rewrite the history books by becoming the first mare to win the race in 75 years.
Completing the top three worst results for William Hill are Final Orders from Ireland, who’s a 25/1-shot, and the Welsh-trained Haiti Couleurs at 18/1.

- Jagwar – 14/1
- Johnnywho – 14/1
- Nick Rockett – 14/1
- Iroko – 14/1

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “The Grand National is a pivotal day for the bookies. It’s the most bet-on race of the year by a country mile, with well over £150 million set to be staked, and it’s the race where people up and down the country love to have a flutter.
“This year, we’re fearing Panic Attack most of all. She’s the only mare in the line-up, looking to break a 75-year curse for her sex in the National, but has been backed into 10/1 all the way down from 66/1 this year. If she comes home in front, it could be us having a panic attack!
“Final Orders and Haiti Couleurs have been the other well-backed ones over the weeks and months building up to Saturday’s big race and would be a bad result for us.”
