Aintree, Saturday
One stands out for me in the William Hill Handicap Hurdle (1:20pm), and it’s Supremely West. He won the Pertemps Final at the Festival like a horse who is an absolute blot in the handicapper’s notebook. Whilst he got a nine-pound rise, I think he merited more for that, and he is still of interest. He looks made for this type of test, and whilst he was laid out for Cheltenham, he still has something in hand and he’s the one for me.
In the Mersey (1:55pm), I like Masked Man for the Twiston-Davies team. He won a point-to-point and was good at Lingfield back in December when last seen. This trip looks right up his street. He got beaten when running over an inadequate trip two runs back, and whilst his form lacks a little bit of substance, I really like this horse, and I think he’ll have the class on this better ground. He’s worth an each-way punt at a big price.
In the William Hill Handicap Chase (2:30pm), I think Emmet Mullins and Donagh Meyler could take out another nice prize with Chance Another One. I think this horse is ground reliant; he is far better on good ground than soft or heavy, and since he won at Kempton in November, I feel that this has been the plan in mind. I thought that he won well off a mark of 124; he is five pounds higher than that, but I think he will really enjoy these conditions, and he’s the one for me.
The Liverpool Hurdle (3:05pm) is a staying contest, and I’m nominating Honesty Policy as the winner, who won here in novice company last season. He got home over two miles last year, and he has run with credit this season in open company. The flat track and its emphasis on speed will help him, and with the tongue strap applied for the first time, he can improve and get his head in front on Grand National Day once again.
The Grand National (4:00pm) is next, and my pick for the big one is Monty’s Star. He’s a dual Grade One runner-up and finished fourth in last year’s Gold Cup. I think they realised that day he probably wouldn’t win a Grade One in open company and have been working back from this contest ever since. They had a look at his handicap mark in Newbury, and he’s run creditably in high-class company since. He’s an excellent jumper, and the extra distance will only enhance his chances. His racing weight is lovely, and it’s Darragh O’Keeffe and Henry de Bromhead to rule the world in the Grand National!
