Newmarket Craven Meeting 2026: Temperatures Expected To Hit Boiling Point On Rowley Mile

The Newmarket Craven Meeting continues into its second day, with the Wednesday highlights being the Group 3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes, plus the fillies are competing in a Group 3 of their own – the Nell Gwyn Stakes.

Our horse racing expert Steve Mullington marks your card, with selections on each race and a best bet in the Group 3 Earl of Sefton Stakes.

1.50 6f Handicap (4yo+ 0-100)

Now trained by Stuart Williams, I have had my eye on the Tony Bloomed-owned HUMAM for some time now.

Campaigned all over Europe at the end of last season, the four-year-old will be much more at home on the wide open Rowley course than anywhere else. He can go well first time up.

2.25 1m1f Feilden Stakes (Listed Race 3yo)

Brian Meehan’s BOURBON BLUES most recently finished second out of six runners in the Group 3 Prix Thomas Bryon at Chantilly on 18 November 2025.

Constantly knocking on the door last season at Listed level, a change of luck must be on the cards today under James Doyle.

3.00 1m1f Earl Of Sefton Stakes (Group 3 4yo+)

The Karl Burke-trained BOILING POINT (NAP) won the Cambridgeshire over nine furlongs at the end of last season and was stepped up to a mile and a quarter for the first time in the Winter Derby.

Even though he wasn’t beaten very far at Lingfield, the all-weather is not really his bag and this return to the turf will see him in a different light.

3.35 7f Nell Gwyn Stakes (Group 3 Fillies 3yo)

INIS MOR (NB) targets the Nell Gwyn today in the hope that she will show her connections that she is worthy of being aimed towards the Guineas, the Oaks or the Prix de Diane.

The form of her race at Longchamp’s Arc meeting has worked out exceptionally well, with the winner now being Group 1 placed. She is therefore well worth a second look in our Craven meeting odds.

4.10 5f Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (2yo)

Owner Jaber Abdullah generally does well with his two-year-old’s and his BINT ARCHANGE is my tentative pick in this short sprint.

Ryan Moore takes the ride so Richard Hughes must rate her chances first time out.

4.55 1m Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (3yo)

LYRICS OF LIFE was thought good enough to be able to contest the Prix des Reservoirs (Group 3) at Deauville last August, and she did her connections proud, finishing 2½ fifth to a useful home filly.

She was really consistent last term and can be backed with a degree of confidence in our sports betting market.

5.17 1m2f Handicap (3yo 0-90)

THE JOKER looked fairly useful last term and Jane Chapple-Hyam has now switched him to handicapping.

On a mark of 80, and with Rossa Rya in the plate, he can put his Zarak pedigree to full use.
