League One
Stockport to secure play-off spot with win over Peterborough
Saturday afternoon brings four key fixtures from League One, with the play-off race taking centre stage as the season nears its conclusion.
With just a handful of games remaining, the margin for error is gone. Several sides are locked in a battle for the top six, while others have little left to play for beyond pride.
League One predictions – Saturday:
Luton 3-0 Barnsley
Doncaster 1-1 Stevenage
Stockport 2-0 Peterborough
Plymouth 3-1 Port Vale
Luton v Barnsley – Saturday, 3pm
Luton – 4/11
Draw – 18/5
Barnsley – 6/1
Luton Town host Barnsley FC in what is effectively a must-win fixture for the home side.
Luton’s push for the play-offs leaves them with no room for error. With rivals Stevenage FC and Stockport County still within touching distance, and Stockport holding a game in hand, dropping points here simply isn’t an option. A win could be enough to propel them into the top six, at least temporarily.
Barnsley, by contrast, are settled in mid-table with nothing tangible to fight for. That lack of pressure can sometimes lead to a more relaxed performance, but it’s difficult to see them matching Luton’s urgency and intensity.
Given the stakes and home advantage, Luton should have too much quality and motivation here.
Doncaster v Stevenage – Saturday, 3pm
Doncaster – 19/10
Draw – 21/10
Stevenage – 13/10
Doncaster Rovers take on Stevenage FC in a game that holds far greater importance for the visitors.
Stevenage currently occupy a play-off spot but know they cannot afford any slip-ups, particularly with Luton applying pressure just below them. A win here would strengthen their position and keep their promotion hopes firmly on track.
Doncaster, meanwhile, are another side with little left to play for, sitting comfortably in mid-table. That can make them unpredictable opponents, but consistency has been an issue throughout their campaign.
Stevenage’s added motivation could make the difference, though this one feels tight and could end level.
Stockport v Peterborough – Saturday, 3pm
Stockport – 1/2
Draw – 10/3
Peterborough – 4/1
Stockport County welcome Peterborough United knowing the importance of keeping pace in the play-off race.
Stockport sit inside the top six but are only three points clear of Luton, and with that game in hand comes added expectation. Winning here would go a long way in maintaining control of their destiny heading into the final stretch.
Peterborough are not entirely safe from relegation mathematically, but their position suggests they are unlikely to be dragged into trouble. Still, that lingering uncertainty could influence their approach.
Stockport’s consistency and urgency should see them through in front of their home crowd.
Plymouth v Port Vale – Saturday, 3pm
Plymouth – 1/3
Draw – 18/5
Port Vale – 15/2
Plymouth Argyle face Port Vale FC in a game that looks favourable on paper for the hosts.
Plymouth know they must win their remaining fixtures to have any chance of breaking into the play-off spots. Even then, they’ll be relying on results elsewhere going in their favour, but the first step is taking care of business here.
Port Vale have already been relegated, and while they’ll want to end the season with some pride, it’s hard to see them matching Plymouth’s intensity and need.
With everything on the line, Plymouth should deliver and keep their slim hopes alive.
