First Leg Review
- Hull City 0-0 Millwall
- Attendance: 24,623
It was tight, tense and often physical before a raucous crowd leaving everything to play for in the second leg.
Hull went close inside two minutes when Mo Belloumi went on a mazy soft shoe shuffle past two defenders and struck the post. Millwall’s Camiel Neghli was also denied by the woodwork from distance.
Oli McBurnie twice threatened for the home side but was just off target. And with five minutes to go, Ryan Leonard shot home in a well-worked Lions’ attack although it was disallowed for a foul.

First Leg Manager Quotes:
Millwall’s head coach Alex Neil said: “I felt the disallowed goal was harsh on us so I would be interested to hear the referee’s thoughts on his decision.
“Overall, we competed well like we wanted to win the game. It was a positive performance.
“I am mindful a lot of my lads haven’t previously appeared in this type of intense Play-Off match. The atmosphere was good and these are the occasions you get into football for. Yet we restricted Hull to one main chance at the very start of the 90 minutes.
“All in all, our first leg display will give us the confidence to try and win Monday’s return game. But I am not naïve. I am sure when we go back to our place, Hull will be comfortable soaking up the pressure and building quickly on the counter-attack.”
Hull City’s head coach Sergej Jakirovic said: “I said in advance nothing would be decided in the first leg. It was a fair result. Both sides fought hard for every ball and every challenge. Therefore a tough encounter.
“We had the best chance through Mo Belloumi. Millwall were dangerous throughout using set pieces and long throws. However I believe we handled it comfortably. At half-time, I told my lads to get closer to Millwall and press them like a group.
“The disallowed goal was clearly a foul. I saw it straight away. If you challenge using two hands and spin your opponent then that is a free-kick.”
