What is the Ebor Handicap?

The Ebor Handicap is run over 1m6f of the Knavesmire for horses aged four and older.

Since 1843, York’s oldest and most famous race, the Ebor, has generated much excitement and has produced many great stories.

It is always a race to savour and draws plenty of interest from both punters and racegoers alike.

Ebor Prize Money

The total prize fund for the 2026 Ebor Handicap at York Racecourse stands at £500,000, just as it was in 2025.

The level of prizemoney means that the famous York handicap retains its status as Europe’s richest flat handicap race. The exact payout breakdown by finishing position distribution is allocated as follows:

• 2nd Place: £89,950
• 3rd Place: £47,500
• 4th Place: £25,000

Race Eligibility

• Age : Open exclusively to horses aged 4 years old and older. Three-year-olds are excluded from the race.
• Minimum Run Requirement: Runners must have completed at least three Flat runs before the final declaration stage.

Balloting and maximum field

The race caps the final starting line-up at exactly 22 runners.

Runners are ranked by their Official Rating (OR), with only the top 22 rating making the race, with the others being eliminated. To make the final ballot, horses generally need an OR of around 100 or higher.

The “Win and You’re In” Qualifying Races

• The Melrose Handicap: Held at York Racecourse during the previous year’s Ebor Festival. Winner = Tarriance

• The Jorvik Stakes: Held at York Racecourse in May during the Dante Festival. It is a 1m4f handicap for four-year-olds and older. Winner = Klassleader

• The Sky Bet Premier Handicap: Held at The Curragh in Ireland in early June. This 1m4f event serves as a target for the Irish raiders. Winner = Poetic Sound

• The Grand Cup Stakes: Held at York Racecourse in mid-June. Winner =  Gregory

Winning any of these contests allows a horse to bypass the ballot elimination process and guarantees them a certain place in the final 22 berths.
