EFL Cup: Newcastle v West Brom – Newcastle tipped to come through a lively second‑round test

William Hill News tipster @Footy_Tipster previews Wednesday’s EFL Cup action between Newcastle and West Brom.

Our Prediction: Both Teams To Score & Newcastle To Win (9/5), Newcastle United 2-1 West Brom (7/1)

Newcastle United welcome West Bromwich Albion to St James’ Park on Wednesday night in the EFL Cup second round.

Now, let’s take a closer look at some EFL Cup odds and betting angles for Wednesday’s fixture:

Newcastle v West Brom – Wednesday, 7.45pm

  • Newcastle United looked good under new boss Matthias Jaissle on Sunday and were unlucky not to kick off their Premier League campaign with all three points having conceded in the 99th minute against Liverpool from the penalty spot in their 2-2 draw.
  • This is a competition that means a lot to the Magpies having ended their 56-year trophy drought by winning the EFL Cup back in 2025, they followed that up last season by reaching the semi-finals, so Newcastle shouldn’t rotate too much here.
  • This is the first time these two sides have met since their Premier League meeting back in 2021, given Newcastle play their football in a league above, it’s no surprise to see them as the 4/11 favourites with William Hill to win here.

  • West Brom have made a brilliant start to the campaign, winning each of their three competitive games so far, including an impressive 3-1 victory over Burnley that has already sparked talk of the Baggies mounting a promotion push this season.
  • Not since 2021 have West Brom reached the EFL Cup third round, and the 1966 winners will be hoping to defy the betting odds in this one, although they’ve won just one of their last six trips to St James’ Park.
  • James Morrison’s side won’t fear the journey to the north east and should be competitive once again. If punters fancy West Brom to continue their winning streak this season, they can back the Baggies at 6/1 with William Hill to win on Wednesday night.
