Next Man United Manager Odds: Eddie Howe favourite to replace Michael Carrick at Old Trafford
Eddie Howe is William Hill’s 9/4 favourite to become Manchester United’s next permanent manager, as Michael Carrick’s position comes under heavy scrutiny following the club’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
Julian Nagelsmann is Howe’s nearest challenger at 9/2, followed by Antonio Conte at 5/1 and Fabian Hurzeler at 11/2. Cesc Fabregas, whose Como side inflicted the defeat on United, is 12/1 alongside Gareth Southgate.
Former United players Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney are also quoted in the market, but are considered outsiders at 66/1 each.
Carrick has shortened from 15/8 to 8/11 to become the first Premier League manager to leave his post this season. The damaging European result, followed by club captain Bruno Fernandes’ post-match comments about pressing, has intensified the scrutiny surrounding the United boss.
Pierre Sage is Carrick’s nearest challenger in the departure market at 3/1, followed by Alvaro Arbeloa at 7/1 and Matthias Jaissle at 10/1. Oliver Glasner and Roberto De Zerbi are both 12/1.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Eddie Howe heads our next permanent Manchester United manager market at 9/4, with Julian Nagelsmann his closest challenger at 9/2 following a night to forget for the Red Devils in Italy.
“Antonio Conte (5/1) and Fabian Hurzeler (11/2) are also prominent in the betting, while Cesc Fabregas is 12/1 after his Como side inflicted such a damaging defeat on United.
“Carrick has been cut from 15/8 to 8/11 to be the first Premier League manager to leave this season. The scale of the defeat, followed by Bruno Fernandes’ comments, has intensified the scrutiny and brought the question of a potential successor firmly into focus.
“We now make Carrick odds-on to be the first departure, with Howe the leading name should United decide to make a change.”
