US Midterms Odds: Republican success would leave bookmakers facing massive payout
William Hill faces a significant loss if Republicans secure control of either the Senate or House of Representatives in tomorrow’s US midterm elections, while victory in both chambers would compound the bookmaker’s exposure.
Republicans are priced at 2/1 to control the Senate and 8/1 to control the House in the supplied market snapshot. Punters have backed both outcomes despite Democratic control of both chambers remaining the favourite in the Balance of Power market at 1/3.
A Democratic House and Republican Senate is priced at 10/3, while Republican control of both chambers is 8/1. A Republican House and Democratic Senate remains the outsider at 66/1.
The battle for Senate control has attracted the main betting interest. Both sides have been heavily backed in Texas and Michigan, while Democratic candidates Sherrod Brown and Adam Hamilton have attracted strong support in Ohio and Kansas respectively.
Brown is 3/10 to win Ohio’s Senate special election, with Republican Jon Husted at 12/5. In Kansas, Hamilton is the 4/7 favourite ahead of Republican Roger Marshall at 5/4.
South Carolina is another potential headache for the bookmaker, with customers backing Democratic outsider Annie Andrews at 7/4 against Republican favourite Darline Graham at 2/5.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Republican success in either chamber would be a poor result for us in tomorrow’s US midterm elections.
“Punters have been keen to take the 8/1 about Trump’s party controlling the House and 2/1 for the Senate, and winning both would compound an already sizeable loss in our book.
“The main action in our US politics market has been on Senate control; Texas and Michigan have attracted heavy support on both sides, while punters appear to be firmly behind the Democrats in Ohio and Kansas.
“South Carolina is another race that we’ll be watching closely. Our customers fancy Democrat outsider Annie Andrews at 7/4, and that support has left us facing a sizeable payout if she wins.”
