Biggest fights

Joshua v Whyte – 12/12/15

After defeating everyone put in front of him, Joshua’s first real test came in his 15th fight while defending the WBC international heavyweight title against fellow Brit Dillian Whyte. Joshua had won the vacant belt after beating former champion Denis Bakhtov inside two rounds to become champion aged just 24 and in his ninth professional bout.

The unbeaten Whyte had talked a big game before the fight, having previously beaten Joshua in an amateur bout in 2009, and had the champion rocked in the second round. Joshua, however, went on to show the fighting spirit that would help him later in his career.

His brutal right hook had Whyte wobbling before Joshua finished him off with a huge uppercut in the seventh round. Whyte had fought gallantly, won the respect of many UK boxing fans and is still a potential opponent for ‘AJ’ in the future.

Joshua v Klitschko – 29/04/17

Despite taking his record to a perfect 18-0, many spectators had suggested that Joshua had yet to be tested by a truly world-class boxer. So, when a bout with one of the greatest heavyweights in history was announced, against Wladimir Klitschko, many had high hopes for a classic – and they were not proven wrong.

After feeling each other out in the early rounds, the fight came alive in the fifth as Joshua looked to put the pressure on. Klitschko responded to being floored by Joshua, winning the rest of the round and putting the IBF world heavyweight champion on the canvas himself in the sixth.

Klitschko tried to press home this advantage but couldn’t put Joshua away as he went back to basics. Just as it looked as though Klitschko might take it on the cards, Joshua came out firing in the 11th, sending the Ukrainian to the canvas twice in the round before the referee stopped the bout.

By adding the WBA and IBO titles to his IBF belt, Joshua’s win placed him alone at the top of boxing’s heavyweight tree.

Joshua v Parker – 31/03/18

Joshua’s 21st professional fight saw him taken the distance for the first time by New Zealand’s Joseph Parker. Despite Joshua adding the WBO title to his glittering collection, the headlines were mostly stolen by the bewildering decision of the referee to prevent either fighter from boxing on the inside – a style of boxing bringing two fighters closer together.

A fight with several accidental clashes of heads was always leaning in favour of Joshua, who wasn’t quite able to impose his attack in the same way as in previous fights. As Parker slipped and moved well from Joshua’s advances, he failed to make a notable impact on the fight himself and the decision from the judges was unanimous in Joshua’s favour.

Joshua v Ruiz Jr. – 07/12/19

After losing to Andy Ruiz Jr. in New York in his 23rd fight, Joshua returned to the ring six months later to face the Mexican in an eagerly anticipated rematch for the IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO world heavyweight titles, this time in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. For Joshua, this was simply a must-win bout.

And win it he did, with Joshua delivering 36 minutes of clever movement and well-timed punching, with Ruiz Jr. never looking like coming close to landing a knockdown against his opponent.

Joshua would go on to secure victory via a unanimous points decision to claim back his world titles and become a two-time world heavyweight champion in the process. AJ was back at the top of the pile in heavyweight boxing.

AJ’s next fight

It’s over to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 25th September for Joshua’s next fight as he takes on WBO mandatory challenger and former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, defending his IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO world heavyweight titles. Joshua is returning to London to fight after last defeating Kubrat Pulev back in December at Wembley Arena.

Joshua is the favourite for the bout, being priced at 2/5 for the win, 10/11  by KO TKO or DQ and 10/3 by a decision or technical decision. Usyk, meanwhile, is 2/1 to cause an upset against Joshua on the night, while he is 7/1 to win by KO TKO or DQ and 11/4 to claim victory by a decision or technical decision.
