Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys Prediction: 21/20 For Hosts To Run Riot & Beat Spread
Thursday Night Football at AT&T Stadium brings together a Dallas side that can score quickly and a Tampa Bay team trying to survive a brutal injury list.
The Cowboys are 9.5-point favourites, with the total sitting at 47.5, so the NFL betting market is already leaning toward a comfortable home win with points on the board.
Tampa Bay arrive with Baker Mayfield ruled out, which pushes Jalon Daniels into the start. Baker Mayfield, SirVocea Dennis, Benjamin Morrison and Antoine Winfield Jr. are all out for the Buccaneers, while Dallas expect Dak Prescott to lead the home offence.
Dallas Are Clear Favourites
The simplest case for Dallas starts with the quarterback mismatch. Prescott has handled the season far better than Tampa Bay’s passing game has, and the Cowboys’ offence is built to punish a secondary that has already shown cracks.
The NFC South side are walking into a game where they need to protect a backup passer and keep pace against one of the sharper passing attacks on the slate.
Dallas also have the edge in the areas that usually decide prime-time spreads. Their offence is producing more efficiently in the red zone, while Tampa Bay have struggled badly to finish drives.
On current numbers, the Buccaneers are converting just 41.7% of their red-zone trips, while Dallas are finishing 81.2% of theirs.
The Cowboys’ pass defence is the one obvious weakness, but Tampa Bay may not have the firepower to make that weakness matter enough.
Dallas have allowed a 122.7 opponent passer rating, the worst figure in the league, yet the Buccaneers are still carrying a 71.6 team passer rating of their own. That is a rough combination when a side is already missing its starting quarterback.
Can Tampa Bay Upset The Odds?
Tampa Bay can keep this competitive if the running game holds up and the defence forces Dallas into a slower rhythm.
Bucky Irving gives the Buccaneers a more stable ground option than their aerial production suggests, and the NFC East team have been softer against the run than you would like for an 8.5-point favourite.
The problem is that Tampa Bay have not been finishing possessions. They are averaging 19 points per game, their scoring has dropped in every game so far, and the offensive line has already allowed 16 sacks through four games.
That kind of pressure tends to shorten drives and drain the upside from an offence that is already struggling for rhythm.
Dallas do not have a dominant pass rush either, which is the one thing Tampa Bay can point to as a possible break. Still, the Cowboys have enough offensive firepower to make that less relevant if Prescott and his receivers get rolling early.
Betting Angles
The side that makes the most sense is Dallas -9.5, because Tampa Bay’s injury situation and quarterback change make it hard to trust the underdog to keep pace for four quarters.
The Buccaneers can find moments through the run game, but the overall profile points to a Dallas team that controls field position, wins the red-zone battle and pulls away late.
The total is more delicate. Dallas have a defence that can be attacked, but Tampa Bay’s offensive ceiling is lower without Mayfield, and their own scoring profile has been trending down.
That makes the under slightly more appealing than a shootout angle, especially if the Buccaneers spend long stretches trying to protect Daniels rather than opening up the playbook.
Prediction
Dallas have the cleaner offence, the healthier quarterback room and the stronger scoring profile, and that should be enough to cover at home.
Tampa Bay’s injuries make it difficult to project a full upset threat, even though the Cowboys’ defence has not been reliable enough to inspire complete confidence when it comes to betting.
- Prediction: Cowboys 31, Buccaneers 20.
A sensible betting approach is to back Dallas to win and cover, then keep any additional play modest and within your limits.
