Lucky 15 Betting Explained: Everything you need to know

Exeter Horse Racing Tips

The Lucky 15 is one of the most popular multiple bets in UK betting, especially among horse racing fans.

It combines four selections into a single bet, giving you 15 separate bets and, crucially, a bit of insurance if things don’t quite go to plan.

If you enjoy backing a handful of strong fancies with William Hill, but don’t want the all-or-nothing pressure of an accumulator, the Lucky 15 could be right up your street.

What is a Lucky 15 bet?

A Lucky 15 is made up of four selections and 15 individual bets:

  • 4 x Singles
  • 6 x Doubles
  • 4 x Trebles
  • 1 x Fourfold Accumulator

The name simply comes from the number of bets involved.

Because singles are included, you only need one winner to get a return. That’s the big difference between a Lucky 15 and a standard accumulator, where all selections must win for you to see any payout at all.

How does a Lucky 15 work?

When you place a Lucky 15, you choose four different selections. Your total stake is 15 times your unit stake because each of the 15 bets carries the same amount.

For example:

  • £1 per bet = £15 total stake
  • £2 per bet = £30 total stake

You can also place an Each Way Lucky 15, which technically consists of 30 bets, as you also include the place bet in every instance.

For example:

  • 50p Each Way Lucky 15 = £15 total stake
  • £1 Wach Way Lucky 15 = £30 total stake

Each combination – single, double, treble and the fourfold – Is placed automatically as part of the bet.

Here’s how returns break down:

  • No winners – You lose your stake.
  • One winner – You’re paid on the single only. Some bookmakers offer one-winner bonuses on horse racing, such as enhanced odds.
  • Two winners – You’re paid on two singles and one double.
  • Three winners – You collect on three singles, three doubles and one treble.
  • Four winners – All 15 bets land, including the fourfold accumulator, delivering the biggest possible return.

The more selections that win, the stronger the payout becomes — but the key safety net is that single winner.

Lucky 15 vs Trixie vs Patent

It’s easy to mix up these system bets, but the structure is what separates them.

A Trixie uses three selections and includes four bets (three doubles and one treble). There are no singles, so you need at least two winners to get a return.

A Patent also uses three selections but includes seven bets: three singles, three doubles and one treble. With a Patent, one winner guarantees a payout.

A Lucky 15 builds on that idea by adding a fourth selection and expanding the combinations to 15 bets, including the fourfold accumulator. That final leg is what gives the bet its real punch if all four selections oblige.

Is a Lucky 15 a smart bet?

It depends on what you’re looking for.

A Lucky 15 can suit bettors who:

  • Like backing multiple selections in one go
  • Want some insurance if only one pick wins
  • Are targeting bigger-priced selections
  • Prefer spreading risk rather than relying on a single accumulator

Because you’re placing 15 bets at once, the overall stake is higher than a straight fourfold. However, you’re getting flexibility in return.

In horse racing, it’s particularly popular when punters fancy four runners on the same card. Rather than choosing between them or lumping them into a risky accumulator, a Lucky 15 allows you to cover several outcomes at once.

Quick example

Let’s say you back four horses in a win only Lucky 15 at:

  • 4/1
  • 5/1
  • 6/1
  • 8/1

With £1 per line (£15 total):

  • One winner at 8/1 returns £9
  • Two winners trigger singles and a double payout
  • All four winners mean every combination lands, including the fourfold, returning the maximum payout.

The bigger the odds, the more powerful the doubles, trebles and accumulator become.

Summary

The Lucky 15 remains a firm favourite for a reason. It offers a sensible middle ground between cautious singles and high-risk accumulators. You get coverage, you get flexibility, and you still keep the chance of landing a sizeable win if all four selections come in.

As with any multiple bet, it’s important to understand how your total stake builds up and how the combinations work. Once you do, the Lucky 15 becomes a straightforward and potentially rewarding addition to your betting strategy.
