William Hill News tipster @Footy_Tipster outlines how the Over/Under market works and why it’s one of the most popular goals bets around.

What is Over/Under Betting?
- Over/Under betting, also known as ‘Total Goals’ betting, involves predicting whether the total number of goals in a match will be above or below a certain threshold set by the bookmaker.
- The same concept can also be applied to various markets including the ‘Total Corners’ and ‘Total Cards’ markets.
Common Over/Under Lines:
- The common Over/Under line is 2.5, whilst Over/Under 9.5 corners and 3.5 cards are usually the lines for their respective markets.
Not just win bets – try an Over 2.5 Goals acca on William Hill
Example:
- Arsenal v Chelsea – If you fancy goals in this fixture, punters could back Over 1.5 Goals at 1/4 (2 or more goals), Over 2.5 Goals at 4/5 (3 or more goals) and so on.
- If you wanted to back the corners market instead, you could back Over 9.5 Corners (at least 10 match corners) at 10/11.
- If you thought this game could be feisty, back Over 3.5 cards (4 or more match cards) at 4/7.
Top Tips Before Making Your Selection:
- Pay attention to teams that tend to have a leaky defence
- Back sides that tend to have attacking threat’s.
- Always check the results of the previous 5 to 10 games.
- History can play a big part, always check if there’s a trend of goals, corners and cards when the teams go head-to-head.
Does Extra Time Count?
- Unless stated, these bets are usually only valid for the 90 minutes plus stoppage time, extra-time doesn’t usually count, make sure you check this before backing these markets.

Asian Lines:
- Unlike standard Over/Under betting where outcomes are strictly win or lose, Asian Total Goals can result in various outcomes including full wins, partial wins, stakes returned (‘push’) or losses.
- Asian goal lines use split totals, meaning your stake is divided across two Over/Under numbers. So if you back Over 2.0/2.5 (shown as Over 2.25), half your stake goes on Over 2 and the other half on Over 2.5. If the match finishes with exactly two goals, the Over 2 half is refunded while the Over 2.5 half loses. Three or more goals land both parts of the bet, giving you a full win.
