Tyson Luke Fury is an English professional boxer who was born in Manchester, England 12th August 1988. Fury is currently undefeated and remains the WBC world heavyweight champion, although he has also previously held The Ring Magazine title from 2020 until August 2022 and several other world titles.

Fury first won the WBC belt in 2020 during his rematch with Deontay Wilder and has defended it only twice since.

Gypsy King belt history

So, what other belts has the Gypsy King previously held? Following Fury’s unanimous decision win over Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, he took the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring titles with him.

Fury’s heritage is of both English and Irish dissent as he was born in an Irish travelling family who emigrated to Manchester prior to Tyson’s birth, while his parents were still young. Fury won the ABA super-heavyweight title as an amateur in 2008 before turning professional later that year while he was still 20 years old. As of November 2022, the Gypsy King remains the number one heavyweight boxer in the world and is yet to be bettered in the ring.

Tyson Fury is an advocate for mental health

Tyson Fury has become an outspoken advocate for mental health since returning to the fight game in 2018. The reason for Fury’s two-and-a-half-year break from the sport was a severe bout of depression which saw the star nearly take his own life.

Following most bouts since his return, the Gypsy King has won the hearts of fans with his personal and revealing story, always standing up for mental health issues in post-fight interviews and having written a book called ‘Behind The Mask’ which he claims to have spent three years writing, having “poured my heart into it and never held any secrets back”.

Fury’s goal of ending the stigma around mental health and advocating especially for men to speak out when they need help has been seen as incredibly admirable and is the first time for a world heavyweight champion to ever shed light on the important issue of mental health.

Fury vs Wilder: An iconic fight

Finding Fury’s best fight is not a challenge, as the Gypsy King has publicly revealed the proudest moment of his career. This was the trilogy of fights between himself and Deontay Wilder, specifically the rematch which took place between the pair after their initial draw in 2018.

The rematch bout was scheduled for 22nd February 2020 and would shake the boxing world. An undefeated Wilder at 40-0-1 is a terrifying thought for any man, with even Fury admitting that he was apprehensive about the challenge of facing the undefeated Bronze Bomber.

During the fight, Fury decked Wilder in the third round with a brutal right hand. Wilder was then dropped twice more, but the referee did not count these as knockdowns. Fury managed to unleash a barrage of strikes before dropping Wilder again in the fifth round, and finally Wilder’s corner threw in the towel during the seventh to stop the American from absorbing any further damage.

Incredibly, as well as being ahead on all scorecards prior to the stoppage, Fury’s defence was superb, having evaded most of Wilder’s strikes with the Bronze Bomber only landing 34 of his 141 punches – just a 24% success rate. This goes to show as well as brutal raw power of a heavyweight, Fury has the agility of a lightweight.
