Gennady Golovkin v Canelo Alvarez III preview: Canelo vows to end opponent’s career in trilogy fight

| BY News Team

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin face off in the ring for a third time in one of the biggest fights of their careers. Can they finally settle their long rivalry?

Billed to be the biggest fight in recent times outside the heavyweight division, the adversaries who have been scrapping for supremacy for half a decade collide for the third time. Canelo is ready to put the dispute to bed, but the veteran Golovkin will surely be looking to retire with a bang.

We preview the massive clash from the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.

A final outing for Golovkin?

With retirement undoubtedly on the horizon for the 40-year-old fighter from Kazakhstan, a third fight against a man that has already forced him into a draw and beaten him in the rematch, could be seen as audacious. However, despite only fighting four times since their last clash, Gennady Golovkin is not backing down from a rivalry that has stuck in boxing fans’ minds for almost five years.

Many have tipped this to be the final fight in Golovkin’s career regardless of a win or a loss, and it seems fitting that in his final showdown, he has the chance to avenge the only blemishes on his professional record.

Golovkin has won 42 of his 44 bouts, and claimed 37 knockouts in his legendary career, only slipping up in his fights with Canelo Alvarez in 2017 and 2018. However, those struggles mean he will enter the ring as the 4/1 underdog here.

With his prowess in his unending ability to inflict the knockout blow, Golovkin is 8/1 to triumph via KO, TKO or DQ and is 6/1 to win via decision or technical decision.

The lighter man, weighing in at 72kg, has a significant height advantage but has only fought once since December 2020. Combined with his growing age, it wouldn’t surprise many if the Kazakh fell to his second career loss. Despite his drawbacks, it is 8/13 that the fight will go the distance.

Proving his supremacy once and for all?

Saul Alvarez, more widely known as ‘Canelo’, is the favourite in this trilogy bout at 1/6. Despite taking only his second professional loss when he was defeated by Dimitry Bivol in May this year, the odds suggest the Mexican is set to successfully defend his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring super middleweight titles in Las Vegas, by beating Golovkin for the second time.

The 32-year-old, who has amassed a large following of fans in recent years, has a very impressive record of 57-2-2 and looks to be in the prime of his career, going almost a decade since his 2013 defeat before taking his only other loss.

Canelo is known for his world-class agility and proficiency in reading an opponent’s move before he makes it. He has developed an incredible knack of dodging punches and combinations to the extent that he can sometimes appear untouchable.

He goes into the round most likely to win every round, is evens to win the encounter on points and is also the favourite to win via KO, TKO and DQ at 8/5.

Interestingly, the Mexican is 4/1 to get knocked down in the first six rounds and both fighters to get knocked down with Canelo to win is priced at 6/1.
