Gilberto Ramirez v Gabriel Rosado preview: Ramirez tipped to steamroll Rosado

| BY News Team

This weekend we head to California as Gilberto Ramirez hopes to strike back in style following his defeat last time out, with Gabriel Rosado taking a step up in weight to enter the ring as a light heavyweight for the first time.

We preview both fighters’ chances below.

Gilberto Ramirez

Gilberto Ramirez is the former WBO Super Middleweight champion and the Mexican fighter’s record comes in at an impressive 44-1. Ramirez does however come into this fight off the back off his only loss having faced Dmitrii Bivol last time out, challenging for and failing to obtain the WBA Super World Light Heavyweight belt.

Ramirez is the gargantuan favourite here at 1/25, with the advantage in every facet of his game. The age, height, reach, record and knockout percentage all favour the Mexican in what seems a total mismatch, with his tricky southpaw stance only adding salt to the wound.

‘Zurdo de Oro’ or ‘Golden Southpaw’ as he is known, has excellent footwork which sets up his dangerous combinations and he will be looking to put an end this fight within the distance. It wouldn’t be surprising if he does just that, as all of his last five victories have come via stoppage, with 30 of his 44 (68%) career wins coming by KO/TKO.

The calibre of opponent Ramirez is used to fighting are just a league above his scheduled opponent and this bout is shaping up to be more of a soft landing for Ramirez after the ego-bruising decision from his last fight. It’s important to remember that these ‘easy’ fights with heavy favourites are commonplace in the sport, and anything can happen when two powerful athletes are battling it out.

Gabriel Rosado

The light heavyweight debutant will head out as the 10/1 underdog. The 37-year-old has failed to get a win in his last three bouts, but to be still competing for belts in all those fights is a testament to his skill and bravery as a boxer coming towards the end of his career.

The odds are stacked against Gabriel Rosado, with his record of 26-16-1 not quite as impressive as that of his opponent. The key to victory here for the underdog will be utilising his speed and agility to evade damaging shots from Ramirez. That speed coming from the lighter division will be one of his only edges and he should utilise it to his full ability here.

The American professional last won against an undefeated Bektemir Melikuziev in 2021, where he came back from being downed in round one to go on and win the bout by knockout. If Rosado is to repeat this performance he will need to bring his A-game against his formidable opponent.

To be frank, Rosado doesn’t hold much of a chance given he comes short in every metric one can measure. But, as mentioned previously, anything can happen once the initial bell rings, including what would be an outlandish 14/1 draw.
