Katie Taylor v Karen Elizabeth Carabajal preview: Taylor set for seventh successful title defence

| BY News Team

Undefeated Katie Taylor will put her world lightweight titles on the line this weekend when she takes on Argentine Karen Elizabeth Carabajal at Wembley Arena.

We preview the fight, which is due to get underway at 10pm on Saturday.

Taylor overwhelming favourite

The WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring female lightweight title holder, Katie Taylor, shows no signs of relinquishing her grasp on her belts. Six challengers have come since she defeated Delfine Persoon to become the undisputed lightweight champion in 2019 and all have fallen in Taylor’s wake.

After a six-month break following her most recent win, a brutal bout with Amanda Serrano in Madison Square Garden last April, the Bray Bomber looks reinvigorated and ready to continue her strong form. That historic contest saw the pair become the first women to headline at Madison Square Garden and Taylor is sure to continue taking women’s boxing to new heights.

There have been rumours of a rematch between the two, but for now, Taylor focuses on defending her titles in London.

On paper this contest should be one Taylor wins easily and it could be an opportunity to showcase her outstanding technical ability. The Irishwoman is heavily favoured at 1/25 to secure victory.

Despite her authority in the win market, the fight is expected to go the distance at 4/11. That’s likely due to Taylor’s strong record over 10-rounds. She has won 15 of her 21 career bouts by decision, with only 6 knockouts.

With that in mind the Bray Bomber is 1/3 to win on the judges’ scorecards and 12/5 to secure a knockout.

Carabajal seeking to pull off huge shock

Her challenger is 32-year-old Argentine fighter Karen Elizabeth Carabajal, who boast an unbeaten career record of 19-0.

However, she has yet to defeat any fighter of note on that winning run and has certainly never faced a boxer of Taylor’s calibre, so it will be a huge step up for her on Saturday.

The Argentine has won only two of her 19 fights by knockout, so it looks unlikely that she will have to power to upset Taylor within the distance. She is 16/1 to win via that method, but her odds of winning via decision are even less at 22/1, and we know Taylor’s endurance and technical ability make her hugely difficult to beat over the distance.

While lesser-known fighters with strong records are always dangerous opponents, particularly if the more favoured fighter believes they already have the win in the bag – and that’s unlikely given Taylor’s temperament – it would be a huge shock were Carabajal to win this one at 11/1.
